Rennes, Museum, no. 56\/1.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/12\/D.61C-Enlightenment-Rennes.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.D.61C<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Pen and ink and wash, 27.8 x 42.4; laid down; wm?.\u00a0 Creased down the center.\u00a0 Inscribed in ink, on the urn at the left: <em>[B]ONI<\/em>, on the urn at the right: <em>MALI<\/em>, and on the lintel of the door: <em>OSTIVM IOVIS<\/em>, and at the lower right, also in ink: <em>Rosso Fiorentino f.<\/em>, and in another ink: <em>n<sup>o<\/sup> 37<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>PROVENANCE: Marquis de Robien, entered the museum in 1793.<a href=\"#endref2\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>LITERATURE:<\/p>\n<p>Rennes, 1863, 85, 56<sup>me<\/sup> Cadre, no. 1, as after Rosso.<\/p>\n<p>Carroll, 1987, 286, 287, n. 3, under no. 91, 288, under no. 92, as a copy of a lost drawing by Rosso.<\/p>\n<p>Ramade, in Rennes, 1990, 217, no. 190, as a copy of a lost drawing by Rosso.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned in P.22, VII S, and in Chapter VIII, these three drawings are derived from a lost study by Rosso for the <em>Enlightenment of Francis I<\/em> in the Gallery of Francis I.\u00a0 These copies of exactly the same composition show a scene that differs from the fresco in the gallery by representing Caesar without sandals, the woman at the far right with upraised arms nude, and by including the head of a bearded man wearing a turban just right of center between two columns of the building and who appears in the Scholz drawing although it does not reproduce the columns.\u00a0 The Rennes and Darmstadt drawings also show, in addition to the inscription on the lintel of the door that is visible in the fresco, the words <em>[B]ONI <\/em>and <em>MALI<\/em> on the urns flanking the door of the building.\u00a0 These do not seem to appear in the painting.<\/p>\n<p>Graphically, the copies show the same kind of penmanship that is found in such drawings as the <em>Annunciation<\/em> in the Albertina (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/12\/D.43a-Annunciation-Albertina-bw.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.D.43a<\/a>) and the Petrarch drawing at Christ Church (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/12\/D.47a-Petrarch-drawing-color.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.D.47a<\/a>), although the execution of none of the <em>Enlightenment<\/em> drawings is sufficiently expert to be recognized as by Rosso himself.\u00a0 However, the washes in the drawings, which are not consistently alike in all three, are so weak and so indecisively placed as to make it unlikely that they reflect specifically or entirely those of Rosso\u2019s lost drawing.\u00a0 The fact that all three copies do not show the same placement of washes may indicate that the original drawing was not a pen and ink and wash drawing like the <em>Pandora and Her Box<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/12\/D.67a-Pandora-and-Her-Box-bw.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.D.67a<\/a>), but rather a more complexly executed drawing done also with white heightening and on a dark ground that the copies variously translate into simpler terms.\u00a0 The lost original drawing could have been like the Albertina <em>Annunciation<\/em> and the Petrarch drawing, and like the original of the lost study for the early version of the <em>Scene of Sacrifice<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2011\/12\/D.50B-Sacrifice-\u00c9cole-des-Beaux-Arts.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.D.50B<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>As the <em>Enlightenment of Francis I <\/em>in the gallery would seem to have been designed around 1535 or 1536, so the lost drawing for it would also date from one of these years.<\/p>\n<p>The attribution of the Scholz drawing to Thiry, possibly suggested by an inscription on the <em>verso<\/em>, is not provable.\u00a0 But a certain caricatural quality of some of the faces in this copy, not found in the others, suggests his hand.<\/p>\n<p>PRINTS: Boyvin, E.12 (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2012\/04\/E.12-Boyvin-Enlightenment-Boston.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.E.12<\/a>).\u00a0 Engraving based on Rosso\u2019s lost original drawing or on a copy of it.<\/p>\n<p>Fantuzzi, E.74 (<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/rosso\/files\/2012\/04\/E.74-Enlightenment-London.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Fig.E.74<\/a>).\u00a0 Etching based on Rosso\u2019s lost drawing or on a copy of it.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr align=\"left\" size=\"1\" width=\"33%\" \/>\n<div>\n<p><a name=\"endref1\"><\/a><sup>1<\/sup> A photograph of this drawing and the information on it recorded in this entry were sent to me by Janos Scholz.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a name=\"endref2\"><\/a><sup>2<\/sup> I should like to thank Mlle M.
