Induction Ceremony: New Exec Board

Congratulations to all the new members of Psi Chi! The induction ceremony took place yesterday afternoon and was a wonderful event to welcome new students and elect the new executive board for the 2010-2011 school year. After time to mingle and eat snacks, we heard from Prof. Michele Tugade (the Psi Chi Faculty Advisor) about the chapter and its goals and then Prof. Randy Cornelius spoke about the history of Psi Chi at Vassar, emphasizing the 10 students who took initiative to start the Vassar chapter 15 years ago. We then welcomed the new members who signed the member book and accepted their certificates and membership cards, concluding in a candle lighting ceremony to mark the occasion. Finally, we elected the new executive board officers:

President: Alex Crocker

Vice President: Cali Calarco

Secretary: Molly Arnn

Treasurer: Moe Byrne

Public Relations: Holly Norgard

Congratulations to the new e-board members! We know Vassar’s Psi Chi chapter is in good hands and we wish you the best of luck this coming year.

Student Conference Success!

The Mid-Hudson Student Research Conference on April 24th was a huge success! The Vassar contingency included one student who presented in the morning and two posters in the afternoon poster session – all of which were very impressive. There were also several students who attended to gain insight into student research. This conference was the first of its kind for Vassar’s Psi Chi chapter and we hope to continue our involvement in these great opportunities for psychology undergraduate students interested in research.

A special congratulations to all of those who were involved this year!

Journal Club Success!

Thank you to everyone that participated in Vassar’s first Psi Chi Journal club! The meeting was a great success. We had a lively debate about decreases in a man’s cognitive functioning in the presence of a female (particularly an attractive woman).

Psi Chi would like to offer a special thanks to Professor Cornelius for choosing this interesting article and leading our informal discussion.

We hope to see you everyone at future such events!

Journal Club: 3/25 5pm BH242

Update (October 4, 2011): This post has been edited to remove a journal article that was protected by copyright. Since this is a past event, I have taken down the article. There is a citation below if you would like to find it. –Carson

This Thursday, come to Psi Chi’s first journal club meeting where Professor Cornelius will lead the discussion! The article up for discussion is entitled “Interacting with women can impair men’s cognitive functioning” (Karremans, Verwijmeren, Pronk, & Reitsma, 2009).

This is a fun and informal way to discuss psychology research with a professor and other interested students. Also, PIZZA will be provided! People who have been invited into Psi Chi, but have not decided whether or not to do so are especially welcomed to come and see what Psi Chi at Vassar is all about.

I hope to see you all there!

Just to recap:

When: This Thursday, March 25, 2010 from 5-6pm

Where: Blodgett Rm. 242
