SUMMARY:Deparment Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:We are hosting a town hall to bring the students and faculty together to discuss the majors\, classes\, the semester\, and upcoming plans for the department. Townhall is a space for all faculty and students to gather\, get to know each other\, and discuss the department. This is also the time for students to present complaints\, suggestions for improvements\, and things of that nature. \nIf you have a thought or topic that you would like to be addressed\, please use this form to submit it. Responses will remain anonymous to the faculty\, and will only be read by the majors’ committee. \nPlease fill out this scheduling form if you are interested in attending so we have a general sense of when most people are available (tentatively Thursday\, Feb. 22nd at 4:30). \nThere will also be food and drinks!

SUMMARY:Physics Major Committee Election
DESCRIPTION:The time has come to decide who will be running for the physics majors’ committee for next year. It has been a blast to get more involved with the department and do everything from getting hbar snacks to organizing department town halls. Please get involved if you are a rising senior\, junior\, or sophomore! You can run to be the co-chair\, secretary\, treasurer\, or another position (descriptions in the google form). A larger committee means more possibilities for the department such as larger events\, more organization\, better representation etc.\n\nhttps://forms.gle/SRYSLoUJxzW3kxV47 Please fill this out by Monday 4/17 and provide a statement if you are interested in running. The election will be held the week after filing.

SUMMARY:APS Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics
DESCRIPTION:Cornell University and Ithaca College are very pleased to host the APS Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics on January 20-22\, 2023. The application was due on October 3\, 2022. Lodging and meals are provided. \nThe keynote presentation will be given by Dr. Nadya Mason\, Rosalyn Sussman Yalow Professor in Physics at University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign. Professor Mason’s research at Illinois focuses on how electrons behave in low-dimensional\, correlated materials\, where enhanced interactions are expected to give novel results. The research is relevant to a variety of technologies\, including quantum communication\, information storage\, and qubit control in quantum computers. \nCUWiP will bring together successful female physicists and over 2\,000 undergraduate women in physics to highlight career opportunities for women in physics and the contributions of women in physics. The meeting will provide ample opportunities for interacting with fellow physicists. The conference will include the following activities: \n\nPresentations by professional physicists on their cutting-edge research and personal career paths;\nPanels featuring career opportunities outside academia;\nWorkshops or panels offering guidance on how to get involved in summer research\, the graduate school application process\, applying to transfer to a four-year college from a community college\, and preparing for and applying for jobs in industry;\nAn opportunity for undergraduate attendees to present their research;\n\nMore information on the APS CUWiP at Cornell University and Ithaca College can be found here: https://sites.google.com/cornell.edu/cuwipatcornellandithacacollege/home. \nWebsites for the other conference sites can also be found on the APS CUWiP webpage at www.aps.org/cuwip. \nThis conference series has been supported by the National Science Foundation\, the Department of Energy\, and is sponsored by the American Physical Society.

SUMMARY:Brown PREP (Promoting Representation and Equality in Physics) Program
DESCRIPTION:Brown University Physics Department is launching the Brown PREP (Promoting Representation and Equality in Physics) program intended to help  students from traditionally underrepresented groups and gender minorities to prepare their applications for advanced study in physics. See the link https://www.brown.edu/academics/physics/brown-prep \nApplications were due on October 21st. Join us on Saturday\, October 29\, from 1 pm to 5 pm EDT for a virtual program. \nWe will have sessions introducing the physics research programs at Brown and sessions devoted to the process of applying\, the graduate student experience\, and the ins and outs of the Ph.D. admissions process. \nStudents will also have the opportunity to sign up at a later date for continuing mentoring via drop-in sessions to help hone their application materials. \nAttendees who apply to the Brown physics Ph.D. program who are US citizens and permanent residents can obtain a waiver of the application fee; international students should contact us\, as we may be able to help. \nThis program is directly trying to address the lack of diversity in STEM and\, in particular\, physics Ph.D. programs due to racial\, ethnic\, or gender identity. As such\, when we mention under-represented minority groups\, there is a special focus on Black\, Hispanic\, and indigenous peoples communities\,  female and female-identifying students\, and other gender minorities\, but members of other marginalized communities are also included. \nProgram Agenda\n1:00-1:40 pm: Welcome and introduction to physics at Brown.\n1:45-2:30 pm: Workshop 1 – Parts of a graduate school application and how to organize them.\n2:30-2:45 pm: Break\n2:45-3:45 pm: Roundtable with current students:  How I organized my application\, and how I decided where to apply?\n3:45-4:30 pm: Workshop 2:  Maximizing your impact–personal statements and letters.\n4:30-5:00 pm: Questions & Answers\, Instructions for signing up for future drop-in sessions and contacts.

SUMMARY:Recruiting Undergraduate Eclipse Ambassadors: We Need Your Help!
DESCRIPTION:NASA and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific are inviting undergraduate students to become Eclipse Ambassadors and help prepare their community for a pair of exciting celestial events! Two solar eclipses will cross North America – first an annular solar eclipse on Oct 14\, 2023\, and then a total solar eclipse on Apr 8\, 2024. \nHundreds of college students across the country will be partnered with amateur astronomers to bring eclipse science\, safe viewing techniques\, and cultural connections for the eclipses to their communities as trained Eclipse Ambassadors. Eclipse Ambassadors will bring outreach programs to local libraries\, colleges\, schools\, and other community organizations with activities and resources provided to the volunteers. Undergraduates will receive a $100 stipend on completion\, plus opportunities to further their involvement in NASA programs. \nThe project hopes to reach 500 communities across the country\, with a particular emphasis on connecting with traditionally underserved audiences. We ask students\, of any major\, to join us to learn new skills\, make connections\, and share their enthusiasm about eclipses and science with the public! We are especially interested in including students from Community Colleges\, Minority Serving Institutions\, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU)\, but all interested students are encouraged to apply. \nThis program is funded by NASA and administered by the nonprofit Astronomical Society of the Pacific.   For more information and to apply\, see: eclipseambassadors.org  If you have further questions\, you can email: eainfo@astrosociety.org
