Vassar Education Collaboration – Exploring College Program

This opportunity is available during the Fall 2022 semester. This is an in person opportunity.

Exploring College is a four-year enrichment program designed to support and prepare high school students for college admission and general life after high school. The program encourages collegiate aspirations and aims to improve college readiness among its participants, many of whom will be first-generation students and/or come from low-income backgrounds, and to increase the number of those students who attend college. In keeping with the mission of the Vassar Education Collaboration, Exploring College also aims to create a community of learners which includes both Vassar students and students from Dutchess County public schools–with a focus on Poughkeepsie High School (Vassar’s nearest neighboring school) and Arlington High School. 

Position Description:

  • Develop a curriculum to prepare HS students for life after college as well as activities that make the program feel like a reliable and meaningful community and support system.
  • On top of this work, students are paired with one or two high school students in the group and do work more catered to individual student’s needs.

Desired Skills:

  • An interest in education
  • Willingness to collaborate and communicate openly with me and other members
  • Comfortable talking/learning/thinking about race and Poughkeepsie

Hours: 

  • Monday 3-5, Wednesday 3-5, Friday 3-5 with a preference for students who can make it to both the Monday and Wednesday slot, Fridays are a lot of fun and more optional; Students can register for either 0.5 unit or 1.0 unit of credit ( min. 40 hrs with org over the semester for + 30 hrs of academic work OR min. 80 hr over the semester with org + 60 hours of academic work)

“Growing Together” Intergenerational Community Garden with Evergreen Minds

This opportunity is available during the Fall 2022 semester. This is an in person opportunity and is only available for CEL credit.Evergreen MindsEvergreen Minds, Inc is a 501(C)(3) charitable organization based in the gorgeous Hudson River Valley region of New York. Evergreen Minds provides people living with dementia and their care partners, enjoyable opportunities for no-pressure experiences in nature and the expressive arts. We keep our group sessions small to ensure a safe, welcoming and personalized experience for all participants.

We strongly believe that people are meant to regularly experience fresh air and nature and this innate connection should not end because we grow older or develop cognitive changes. We also believe fresh air, nature, self-expression and laughter are vital for our mental, physical and emotional well-being.

The objective of ‘Growing Together’ is to join people of various ages and cognitive abilities to create a community garden where ALL are welcome as they ARE. The focus is on abilities not disabilities, and to promote intergenerational relationships and understanding that people living with dementia are able to continue to contribute to society and live a life of purpose and meaning. The garden will be planted at the Environmental Cooperative.

Location: Vassar Farm & Ecological Preserve

Position Description:

  • Gardening tasks such as weeding, watering, pruning, harvesting
  • Collaborate with community organizations in the area
  • Work with people living with dementia
  • Community outreach

Desired Skills:

  • Students interested in working with people living with dementia
  • Students interested in hands-on gardening work

Social Media Intern for The Art Effect

This opportunity is available during Summer 2022 and during the Fall 2022 semester. 

The Art Effect empowers young people to develop their creative voice to shape their futures and bring about positive social change. The Art Effect helps youth explore, experience, and excel in the arts, introducing them to visual arts and media, giving them the opportunity to develop real skills in these fields, and guiding them towards achieving their academic and career goals.

Position Description:

  • Building content for marketing materials (including e-blasts,
    blog posts, press releases, social media, flyers, etc.)
  • Inputting information into community calendars
  • Conducting web analytics

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite
  • Graphic design experience preferred

Hours: Availability required is at least 4 hours per week.

Various Positions with Celebrating the African Spirit

This opportunity is available during the Summer 2022. Parts of this CEL can be conducted remotely.

Celebrating the African Spirit (CAS) is a Poughkeepsie, NY 501(c)3 non-profit community-based organization. Their goal is to commemorate the contributions of enslaved Africans and their descendants in the building of the City of Poughkeepsie. They engage in social action projects to address the consequences of institutionalized racism that Black and Brown people live with today. The mission of Celebrating the African Spirit is to acknowledge, articulate, research and commemorate the lives of enslaved Africans in Poughkeepsie, New York. CAS honors the legacy of enslaved Africans and their descendants in Poughkeepsie, through memorials, historical markers, commemorations, events and works with Poughkeepsie young people on these projects of mutual learning and co-creation.
