Homes Are Not Hotels Poughkeepsie Block Party

Homes Are Not Hotels Poughkeepsie Block Party organized by For The Many

For the Many is hosting a Block Party in Poughkeepsie to get the word out about our Homes Are Not Hotels campaign! RSVP here!

This campaign is taking on one of the major factors in the Hudson Valley housing crisis: vacation rentals (like Airbnbs) owned by absentee investors who live off-site. These outside investors are buying up huge amounts of houses and apartments and turning them into unregulated hotels for tourists instead of renting or selling them to long-term Hudson Valley residents.

Fewer housing options means that rents, property taxes, and home prices are going up for Newburgh residents while outside investors make a huge profit from renting to tourists. We’re fighting back and saying: our homes are not hotels!

Poughkeepsie Common Council Meeting – Good Cause Eviction (virtual)

The Common Council is the law-making body of the City of Poughkeepsie and is comprised of 9 members. 8 ward representatives and 1 member At-Large. Similar to Congress at the federal level, we are the City of Poughkeepsie’s legislative body. The Council is separate from the Mayor’s administration but an equal partner in how our City is run.

Good Cause Eviction is a piece of legislation that would require a judge to approve every eviction and rent raise by a certain set of conditions.

Read the Good Cause Eviction Fact Sheet here.

This meeting will be held virtually, Zoom link forthcoming.
