Mapping and Database Intern for Schooner Apollonia and the Center for Post Carbon Logistics

This opportunity is available during the Spring 2022 semester. This opportunity can be conducted virtually and is only available for CEL credit.

Map trade routes and ports on the Hudson River to assist Sail Freight!

Apollonia, a 65 ft Schooner, completed her maiden season last year using wind to deliver over 65,000 lbs of freight and cargo throughout the Hudson Valley. This was just the first step in our work to establish working trade routes along the Hudson River connecting local producers, consumers- all the while bringing focus to the Hudson River and activity to waterfronts.

Now we need good tools for sharing this supply chain with consumers so they can make informed decisions. We are seeking an intern to help us visualize our data and trade routes on our website. The intern will work directly with the vessel captain and crew members to gather relevant information, and work independently to create an interactive, multimedia story blog. You will also have the opportunity to gather and update information on an existing GIS widget and could dive deeper and develop the on-shore bicycle widget and / or start to add current bathymetry data.

Desired Skills/Qualifications:

  • Interest in Sustainability and the Hudson River

  • Friendly personality and willingness to make phone calls and gather information

  • Excellent visual communication skills

  • Web Design, familiarity with SquareSpace

  • Basic GIS skills, or willingness to learn

  • Ideally photography and social media ability

  • Ideally some boating experience (not required)
