Intern with Rhinebeck Writers Retreat

This opportunity is available for Summer 2022. This is an in-person position that requires the student to have their own vehicle.

RWR stacked logo.pngCreated in 2011, Rhinebeck Writers Retreat is a crucial incubator of new musicals. We give 8 musical theatre writing teams a private, weeklong residency in a home near Rhinebeck, NY, where they focus solely on writing. Our writers’ musicals have been produced in theaters across the country such as The Public Theatre (NY), Playwrights Horizons (NY), La Jolla Playhouse (CA), Paper Mill Playhouse (NJ) and Dallas Theater Center (TX). Past Rhinebeck writers include Tony winners Duncan Sheik and Stew, and multi-award winners Joe Iconis, Nathan Tysen, Alex Timbers, David Hein, Irene Sankoff, Grace McLean, Isabella Dawis, Tidtaya Sinutoke, and Max Vernon.

We receive funding from National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts, ASCAP Foundation, and The Noël Coward Foundation.

Position:  Part-time, Paid summer internship
You can have another job Monday to Friday and still do this internship. You’ll work on weekends between July 1 and August 29. The pay is $15 per hour; and you are reimbursed for the use of your car at $.55 per mile.  You will work on average 8 hours per week, but the hours aren’t guaranteed.

You’ll report to Founding Executive Director Kathy Evans. Responsibilities primarily involve driving the musical theatre writers around. Every Sunday (our writer switchover day), you’ll drive to the Poughkeepsie train station to pick them up, take them to a grocery store, and then the writers’ home, 25 minutes east of Rhinebeck in Pine Plains. On 5 Saturdays, you will assist with “Meet the Writers” events held at different locations such as Oblong Book Store. You’ll take photos and videos for our Facebook page. You may also be in charge of our Instagram page. There might be occasional driving for the writers needed on weekdays, but this is not required.


You must use your own car (must be 4-door) and be fully insured. You must be vaccinated and boosted with the COVID-19 vaccine and be at least 18. Seeking highly responsible, personable, flexible individual who is an excellent driver. It’s important to be a great communicator, since most work is done by email, text, and phone. There are no employee benefits, such as health or unemployment insurance.
