SUMMARY:MODfest 2025
DESCRIPTION:All MODfest events are free and open to the public. No reservations are necessary unless otherwise noted. Various venues at Vassar College\, 124 Raymond Ave.\, Poughkeepsie\, NY 12604 \nMODfest 2025\, “Discovering Uncertainty\,” explores the loss of certainty that is the legacy of the scientific and artistic developments of the early 20th century. In the realm of physics\, early investigations into the behavior of the electron found that it defied the laws of classical mechanics. Particles appeared to move discontinuously\, in violation of the laws of motion codified by Isaac Newton in the 1680s. The sub-atomic realm uncovered by quantum theorists was one of probability and contingency: of Uncertainty. At the same time\, musicians\, artists and writers of the European and American avant-garde were calling into question many of the artistic values that had held sway for generations: harmonic practice in music\, the use of figure and representation in art\, narrative structure and perspective in fiction. A new age sought new techniques; a creative uncertainty arose that has persisted to this day. MODfest 2025 highlights the presence of indeterminacy and digital technology in the music of the last hundred years and offers platforms for discussion of the widespread adoption throughout our society of technologies made possible by the discoveries of quantum theory. \n  \n—Events: January 31–February 9\, 2025\nDetails at: http://modfest2025.vassar.edu\n—Exhibitions beginning January 16 at the Palmer Gallery (Vassar College Main Building)\, as well as on\nview now at the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center\, Vassar College\, 124 Raymond Ave.\, Poughkeepsie\, NY\n12604. Exhibition closing dates vary. Details at: http://modfest2025.vassar.edu/#exhibits\n—MODfest opens January 31 at 5:30pm with a lecture in Taylor Hall titled “100 Years of Quantum\nUncertainty” by Associate Professor of Physics José Perillán\, and a choral presentation\, Stimmung\, by\nKarlheinz Stockhausen\, a 70-minute work for six singers to be held at Skinner Hall of Music at 7:30 p.m.\n—On Saturday\, February 1\, 7:30pm in Skinner Hall\, Dr. Daniel J. Levitin\, Professor of Psychology and\nNeuroscience\, McGill University\, will deliver a lecture on how music has been used throughout history for\nmedical purposes. Dr. Levitin will uncover the latest findings in this rapidly developing field on how music\ncan be used to treat injury and disease and promote wellness.

SUMMARY:Fusing Forms: Contemporary Women Reimagining Encaustics\, Opening Exhibition Reception
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception:\nSaturday\, February 1\, 2025 5-7 pm \nOn display through March 2\, 2025 \nEncaustic\, derived from the Greek word enkaustikos meaning “to burn in\,” is one of the oldest artistic mediums\, combining heated resin\, beeswax\, and pigment. Revived in the 20th century\, it continues to inspire contemporary artists today. This exhibition features nine female artists who expand upon traditional encaustic techniques in painting\, sculpture\, printmaking\, book arts\, and mixed-media works. Together\, they explore the medium’s versatility by incorporating fibers\, found objects\, and conceptual ideas\, blending ancient processes with modern approaches to create compelling\, tactile forms. Their works reflect the enduring and evolving nature of encaustic art. \nParticipating artists: Andrea Carracedo\, Terri Yacovelli\, Michele Randall\, Christina Brady\, Alaina Enslen\, Sally Hootnick\, Tracy Casagrande Clancy\, Bonny Leibowitz\, Lorraine Glessner

SUMMARY:HOMECOMING: A Sound Healing Journey
DESCRIPTION:HOMECOMING: A Sound Healing Journey\nFebruary 8\, 1:00pm\nLocation: GWI Greenhouse\, 65 St James Street\, Kingston \nHOMECOMING is an exploration of early African American music and sound meditation as binding and healing mediums. This sound journey will take participants through the not-so-distant past to the present juncture of time. \nThis offering reflects deep meditation\, an encounter with early prison work songs\, and contemplations on what we are learning about history. As we dive deeper into the music\, we can hear the elders speaking through time\, not to be discarded or ignored. This project is not the experience of all Black people in America but rather a snapshot or dream of forgotten voices made present. \nOne of the paths to finding healing is to be seen and heard. The experience of HOMECOMING allows us to explore the boundaries between sound and healing. We hope to expand on the voices and experiences unacknowledged\, unheard and unseen. \nSpace is limited. We ask that you register in advance and arrive by 12:45 pm\, as we will begin to open the space to others at 1:00 pm. \nINFO + REGISTRATION

SUMMARY:Thrift 2 Fight: Breaking Up with Billionaires
DESCRIPTION:It’s time we break up with billionaires as best we can. It’s not gonna be perfect. Media and energy companies have made it nearly impossible to opt out. All in all\, it’s an abusive relationship. But there are some things we CAN do: we can cut the strings that attach us to them\, and tie ourselves to each other instead by making new networks of support.\n\nFor example: switching from using Audible (Amazon) to using Libby (for free!) through your library card\, deciding to go in on a farm share with a group of friends\, deleting your long-abandoned social media account\, finally resetting your forgotten password for Netflix to unsubscribe (have you also been thinking about it for years?)…\n\nSo\, at this pre-Valentine’s Day gathering\, we’re going to support each other logging out\, cancelling subscriptions\, deleting accounts\, tapping into free and non-exploitative resources. We’ll gas each other up\, share info\, and celebrate being so much better off without them in all the ways we can help it.\n\n\n\n\nWhere/when: Thrift 2 Fight\, Valentine’s eve (2/13)\, 6-7:30pm.\nHow to prepare: analyze what services you would like to get rid of. Make a short list.  (“I want to stop shopping at Target\, ordering from Amazon\, and giving my information to Twitter”)\nBring: your laptop\, your notebook\, and whatever else you’ll need.\nOn the night of the event: you will make a step-by-step guide for yourself (“1. I need to learn what my shopping alternatives are and plan the next trip\, 2. I will log into my Amazon account and go through the deletion process\, 3. I will delete my account from Twitter and delete the app from my phone.”)\nWe will support each other in going through those steps! If you’re not sure whether/how you can make these adjustments\, bring those questions with you! This will be a collective brainstorm and we’ll keep it as judgement-free as possible.

SUMMARY:Solidarity Civics: Responding to Executive Disorder
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 20\, 2025\n6:00-7:30pm\n@ GWI Greenhouse\, 65 St. James St\, Kingston \nWhat can we do in the aftermath of the president signing 200+ executive orders? How can we come together to process and respond to the real and lasting damage that could result from these regressive actions? How can we build grassroots power and community-led mutual support to ensure we stand in resistance and in solidarity? \nWe believe that it is more imperative than ever that we emerge from our individual attempts at staying grounded (as important as they are) and join forces. \nGood Work Institute invites you to a gathering. Our purpose is to hold space\, a forum\, for us to strengthen our understanding of what is happening and cultivate a collective sense of focus and action. We are joining the chorus of voices calling for local\, regional\, and state-wide networks to rise up to fill the gaps\, to resist a narrative of helplessness\, and to promote instead a tangible alternative to the chaos. We want to support and encourage a community response – with deep democracy at its core – exercising our ability to work collaboratively together\, to make decisions through a lens of wisdom and care\, and move into action. We will not be obeying in advance. \nIn this forum\, we will: \n\nLearn about the executive orders\, what they say and what they mean for our communities\nHave a chance to hear from each other\, voicing our feelings and insights in a facilitated circle\nShare opportunities to move towards Good Work and solidarity\n\nFree\, registration required.
