DESCRIPTION:Scott James\, head of Prepare Your Community\, will join us to share the story of how his community came together to plan for “the big one” with a focus on neighbors. Bainbridge Island\, off the coast of Seattle\, is located in an area prone to earthquakes and tsunamis. They’ve taken what they developed and shared it as a free kit for other communities—even those that don’t suffer from the same kinds of disasters. Scott will talk us through his approach to planning and mutual aid\, and how much of it has to do with mindset and process. About Our Speaker: Businessweek named Scott James one of America’s Most Promising Social Entrepreneurs and Forbes profiled him as a Game Changer. One of his companies was a founding B Corp. His film projects include the opening shorts at the first United Nations Climate Change Summit (producer Lyn Lear and director Louie Schwartzberg). The products from his other companies have been featured in publications as diverse as Oprah’s O Magazine\, National Geographic\, Parents\, the Washington Post\, Outside\, and U.S. News & World Report. In addition to social impact ventures\, Scott is also active in nonprofit work. He was awarded a Governor’s Award of Excellence in Service by the state of Washington for his community preparedness work. Scott is the author of the book Prepared Neighborhoods: Creating Resilience One Street at a Time.

We touch on the tools\, policies and practices that support democratic decision making\, and offer a glimpse into how they can be put into action. You will emerge with a sense of how to start taking steps towards sharing power in your organization or working group. \nIn 2019\, the Good Work Institute team made the collective decision to move from a hierarchical organization to a Worker Self-Directed Nonprofit. Together\, we built a system of shared governance that serves the needs of our organization while honoring our unique individual contributions. DESCRIPTION:We know that collaboration is not an automatic result of a desire to work together well\, but flows from intentional\, ongoing practices that develop the awareness and capacities of the members of the working group over time. Enter the facilitator. \nIn this lightly-facilitated gathering\, we aim to provide a space for all of us to share our approaches\, challenges\, and learnings as we experiment and grow in our practice as facilitators. This offering is a discussion-based session\, a community of practice. This is not a workshop\, although we will share tips and tricks\, as we hear from each other. \nWe invite you to join this discussion if any of the following apply: \nYou hold the responsibility in leading or co-leading a class\, working group\, or team\nYou sense there might be better ways for you all to collaborate in meetings but are not sure how to shift things\nYou seek a more democratic process when making group decisions or gathering people’s input\nYou’d like support from other facilitators! \nMore info & Registration here

SUMMARY:Rooted & Resourced: A 1-Day Retreat for Change-Agents
DESCRIPTION:Are you longing for a chance to recharge and renew your commitments in solidarity with others? Join GWI for a meaningful\, joyful one-day retreat to find a rooted sense of belonging and to resource the important work ahead. \nThis one-day retreat is a chance to take intentional time away from day-to-day challenges to be in community with others who are working towards just futures and regenerative practices. We have three goals: to build relationships that bolster our access to mutual support\, to refresh practices that help move us collectively towards durable and positive change\, and to renew our energies in an environment crafted to open our hearts and light up our vitality. \nGWI facilitators will offer a nourishing set of collaborative sessions\, designed to balance energizing full group experiences and time to talk in smaller groups. We will invite participants in spaces that will allow everyone to share\, learn and listen; we will provide time for renewing our energies; and we will offer space to practice the skills required for joyful\, effective\, cooperative action. \nWe will be drawing from practices that include: setting working agreements; non-violent communication and empathy share; clarity on the vision that animates us; and tools for how to hold space and use equitable meeting practices in your organizing efforts or workplaces. Esther\, a black seamstress\, sews exquisite lingerie for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes. She has saved enough to allow her to dream of one day opening a beauty salon for black women\, and at thirty-five years old\, longs for a husband and a future. When she begins to receive beautiful letters from a lonesome Caribbean man who is working on the Panama Canal\, it looks like life may be about to take a different course. \nPresented through special arrangements with Dramatists Play Service.
