SUMMARY:In Conversation with Curtis Dozier: The White Pedestal: How White Nationalists Use Ancient Greece and Rome to Justify Hate
DESCRIPTION:Join The Good Work Institute for their latest author talk where they welcome local writer Curtis Dozier to discuss his book The White Pedestal: How White Nationalists Use Ancient Greece and Rome to Justify Hate. Space is limited\, please register here! \n“It is difficult to ignore the resurgence of white nationalist movements in the United States\, many of which employ symbols and slogans from Greco-Roman antiquity. A long-established neo-Nazi website incorporates an image of the Parthenon into its logo\, and rioters wore Spartan helmets in the January 6\, 2021\, attack on the U.S. Capitol. These juxtapositions may appear incongruous to people who associate the ancient world with enlightened political ideals and sophisticated philosophical inquiry. But\, as Curtis Dozier points out in The White Pedestal: How White Nationalists Use Ancient Greece and Rome to Justify Hate\, it’s hard to imagine a historical period better suited to rhetorical use by white nationalists. Part introduction to contemporary white nationalist thought\, part exploration of ancient racism and xenophobia\, and part intellectual history of the political entanglements of academic study of the past\, this book reveals that contemporary white nationalist intellectuals know much more about history than many people assume—and they deploy this knowledge with disturbing success.” – Morteza Hajizadeh\, Ph.D. graduate in English\, University of Auckland in New Zealand. \nAbout Curtis Dozier \nCurtis Dozier received his Ph.D. in Classics from the University of California\, Berkeley in 2008 and has taught at Vassar College since then. He is an internationally recognized expert on how extremists and hate groups invoke Greco-Roman antiquity to promote their politics. He is the author of The White Pedestal: How White Nationalists Use Ancient Greece and Rome to Justify Hate (Yale University Press\, 2026) and has been documenting examples of appropriations of Greco-Roman antiquity by hate groups online at his award-winning website Pharos: Doing Justice to the Classics since 2017. He has appeared on Public Radio’s “Academic Minute\,” BBC Radio 4’s “Anti-Social\,” KPFA’s “Against the Grain\,” and the Karen Hunter Show on Sirius XM.

SUMMARY:Going to The Source!
DESCRIPTION:From its earliest years\, Vassar has encouraged students to learn by “going to the source.” This signature program will bring participants together to consider two guiding questions: \nHow might we foreground “going to the source” as central to the definition\, development\, and nurturing of institutional and individual character within contemporary learning institutions?\nIn this fractured time\, when AI and social media offer both opportunities and threats\, could “going to the source” provide a helpful lens and way to mitigate distrust and discord? \nJoin us for an opening keynote by Dr. Anton Treuer followed by a collaborative exploration of the broad applications and opportunities offered by Vassar’s long-standing approach and its potential to build character by affirming relational and generative learning. A campus-based evening lecture will follow. \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Everything You Wanted to Know About Indians But Were Afraid to Ask: Reframing Our Stories and Our Future
DESCRIPTION:What do we really know about Native America—and where did what we think we know come from? In this engaging and accessible presentation\, acclaimed author and educator Dr. Anton Treuer draws on history\, storytelling\, scholarship\, and lived experience to illuminate the contemporary realities of Indigenous peoples and the larger forces shaping how Americans understand race\, identity\, culture\, and one another. Moving beyond stereotypes and simplified narratives\, Treuer explores how listening to voices too often left out of the story can transform not only our understanding of the past but our relationships in the present. Designed especially for students while welcoming the broader Vassar and surrounding community\, the presentation invites curiosity\, candid questions\, and meaningful dialogue. Treuer offers practical insights from decades of work in education\, cultural revitalization\, writing\, and community engagement\, challenging participants to examine inherited assumptions\, engage difference with courage and humility\, and recognize their own capacity to help build a more informed and connected future.
