SUMMARY:Town of Poughkeepsie Town Board meeting
DESCRIPTION:workshop meeting. No votes will be taken\, but the board will discuss three proposed changes to our Town Code: increasing fines to hold landlords more accountable for nuisance parties; adopting an application process and rules for commercial filmmakers who seek to work in the Town; and a proposal for “inclusionary zoning”. The last of these would require that any real estate developer who proposes a project in the Town of ten units or more\, either for rental or home ownership\, set aside one out of each ten units as affordable / workforce housing. We will discuss the details of this on Wednesday night. By adopting this approach\, some nearby municipalities have succeeded in substantially increasing the supply of new affordable housing. I will also give an update Wednesday on plans for relocating the Police / Courts from the Tucker Drive site\, and other board members will report on committee activities.

SUMMARY:Past\, Present\, and Future: Supporting our Changing Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Past\, Present\, and Future: Supporting our Changing Landscapes \nBiological communities are always in a state of change. By exploring how plant communities in the Mid-Hudson region have changed in the past\, we gain an important perspective on current patterns. How has the gain and loss of species over time shaped our landscape? What can we learn from previous ecological restoration projects? And what practical approaches can we take now to support overall biodiversity in this region and beyond? \nDr. Meg Ronsheim is a Professor of Biology at Vassar College. Her current area of research focuses on the impact and management of invasive vines\, forest regeneration\, and restoration ecology. A number of you will recognize her from the wonderful walk and talk she gave us at Locust Grove last spring. Bring your native plant questions for a lively discussion. \nThe second annual meeting of Wild Ones Mid-Hudson Valley will follow Meg’s talk. You will learn more about our work and opportunities to get involved. Snacks and coffee available. \nAll are invited! \nRegistration is required. Register here! \nIf you have any questions\, please contact wildonesmhv@gmail.com. \nSubscribe to our monthly newsletter to receive program announcements.

SUMMARY:The Lenape People in the Hudson Valley
DESCRIPTION:“The Lenape People in the Hudson Valley” (Saturday\, Nov. 15\, 1 p.m.\, at Mount Gulian Historic Site\, Beacon): For more than 12\,000 years\, the ancestors of the Lenape culture lived and thrived in Lenapehoking\, the land of the Lenape\, which included the Hudson Valley. Local tribes such as the Wappinger\, Esopus and Tappan encountered Henry Hudson along the Mahicannituck in 1609. The Mount Gulian property was identified as the site of temporary Lenape encampments\, and was also the site of the Rombout Patent of 1683\, which was the selling of much of Dutchess County by the Lenape to colonial settlers. Interaction with the Europeans forced the Lenape to develop survival strategies\, resulting in a group leaving the area to live elsewhere. This talk\, given by Harv Hilowitz\, a Contributing Scholar for the Maritime Museum in Kingston\, will focus on Lenape life-ways before the Contact Period and delve into the Lenape diaspora\, and the current renaissance and return to the area. To purchase tickets\, call (845) 831-8172 or email info@mountgulian.org. Payment may be made the day of the event. \n

SUMMARY:Evan Menist Senate 39 Campaign Kick Off
DESCRIPTION:Evan Menist – Never Bought\, Never Bossed. \nThe system is broken. Families across the Hudson Valley are being crushed by the cost of living. People can’t afford their rent\, their mortgage\, or their property taxes. They can’t afford their utility bills. They can’t afford groceries. Working people are doing everything right\, but the deck is stacked against us. \nI know what it’s like to live paycheck to paycheck\, and I know how to un-rig the system and rebuild it so it works for us. That’s why I’m running for State Senate in the Mid-Hudson Valley. \nMeanwhile\, my opponent isn’t just backed by big money—he’s part of a political dynasty that’s been pulling the strings in New York for years\, taking from the least of us to help out his greedy friends. I’m sick of it and I know you are too. \nThe government is supposed to be of the people\, by the people\, and for the people—and this campaign is about putting power back in the hands of working people like you and me. Together\, we can overcome the elites who’ve been looking out for each other at our expense for decades. \nEvery dollar we raise builds the grassroots campaign we need to win. Chip in today to be part of this fight.

SUMMARY:53rd Annual Dutchess Community College Foundation Holiday Craft Fair
DESCRIPTION:The Dutchess Community College Foundation Holiday Craft Fair\, which celebrated its semicentennial anniversary in 2022\, offers Hudson Valley locals and visitors the opportunity to shop small (and support handmade!) Thanksgiving weekend. The foundation is now partnering with Quail Hollow Events in the promotion and organization of the decades-old fair. \nBoasting just over 100 artists\, the fair has become a holiday shopping tradition for many in the region\, and one that stands in stark opposition to the Black Friday culture propagated by Big Box Stores. Entering its 53rd year in 2025\, the fair presents an alternative to the frenzied buying experience that Black Friday consumers experience. This is not a festival for imported or mass-produced products; everything onsite is handmade\, with the artist or maker in attendance. Like Quail Hollow’s other events\, this one is juried\, with exhibitors thoughtfully selected to ensure a balanced assortment of handmade art\, crafts\, and goodies that vary widely in terms of style and taste. \nVisitors will find holiday favorites\, like fresh\, locally sourced wreaths\, delicate holiday ornaments\, and tasty treats\, but these seasonal staples are part of a broader sea of handcrafted pieces. The event will showcase a bevy of skilled artists and makers in over 10 media categories. Rows of carefully curated booths will display something for every taste – and for everyone on your gift list – from fine art and photography\, to ceramics\, jewelry\, woodwork\, fiber (both wearable and decorative)\, specialty foods\, and small-batch cosmetic products like candles and soaps. Find heirloom-quality wall art and ceramics\, display-worthy cutting boards\, wearable art like sweater-scarves\, wraps and cold weather necessities\, and fine jewelry (ranging from classic to quirky to modern). \nQuail Hollow values the interaction between visitor and maker and hopes to foster this relationship within the halls of Dutchess Community College for decades to come. Says director Ola Rubinstein\, “The real center and heart of these festivals is the connections that are made. The visitor experience involves much more than holiday shopping. Through engaging with the artist\, visitors will learn about the artistic process and the history of the item that they are observing or purchasing.” \nThe DCCF Holiday Craft Fair will take place at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie\, in Falcon and Drumlin Halls\, the weekend following Thanksgiving. The event is rain or shine\, and shuttles transport shoppers between the two event halls.
