DESCRIPTION:U-Haul Truck Pop-up Art Galleries on the streets of downtown Poughkeepsie!\n \nPK Art Mile is a free celebration of local art\, music\, and culture in downtown Poughkeepsie. \nThe focus of the event is a series of U-Haul trucks transformed into immersive pop-up art galleries by local artists and curators. This mobile art exhibition and street fair will take place outside of Gallery 40 on Cannon Street\, Sunday\, August 9th\, 2:00-6:00 PM. A second event is planned for September 12-13th\, a two-day celebration to coincide with Poughkeepsie Open Studios. The street will be closed for Summer Sundays\, a free block party that includes live music\, food trucks\, beer and spirits from King’s Court Brewing Co.\, and games for kids and adults. Award winning arts educator Carrie Decker will also be giving hands-on art workshops for kids of all ages in her Crazy Over Art Van. \nPK Art Mile aims to bring art directly to the public\, drawing visitors to the area\, temporarily activating public spaces into vibrant community assets. SUMMARY:Intro to Navigating Conflict Workshop (online)
DESCRIPTION:More than ever\, the world needs your aliveness. Join us in learning how to relate with skill\, compassion and effectiveness. \nIn this introductory online workshop\, we will cultivate our capacity to connect with ourselves and others\, practice nonviolent communication skills\, and develop conflict resilience in our work with others. \nWe want to know that our collective efforts to bring about needed changes and work toward Just Transition will be fruitful. When we pour ourselves into the things we care about\, we want to know it matters. Especially in times such as these\, how exhausting to see our hard work melt away as conflict slows down\, stalls out\, or\, worse yet\, dissolves our collaborations. \nThe legacies of a domination paradigm (capitalism\, patriarchy\, white supremacy\, to name a few) have left us without the skills we need to lean into interdependence. This makes it incredibly hard to collaborate effectively. It makes it harder still to find generativity in conflict. \nBut it doesn’t have to be this way! Nonviolent or “Compassionate” Communication (NVC) offers us a toolkit to deepen our own embodied self-connection\, build our capacity to reach out for support\, and relate to ourselves and one another with empathy so that we can show up more fully to our work in the world. And as we begin to unpack the way that domination culture has shaped our very language\, we can learn new/old ways of communicating that bring us more deeply into alignment with our values\, our purpose\, and into connection with one another. \nDuring this online intro workshop we will explore practical strategies for undoing domination in ourselves\, our communication\, our relationships\, and our collaborations. The session will include interactive content and practices to engage with real-time examples from your life. You will have the opportunity to be paired up with another participant for practice outside of the workshop.This workshop will support you to: \nIdentify patterns of domination culture and develop a needs-based orientation that can enable you to undo domination\nExplore NVC as an embodied mindfulness practice and grow your capacity to tune into body sensations as valuable feedback from your nervous system pointing you towards what matters to you\nGrow your awareness of and vocabulary for resonant language – including “feelings” and “needs” – and your understanding of the brain science behind why this kind of language works\nDevelop an empathetic listening practice with a buddy outside of sessions as a foundational tool for resourcing yourself to show up better in conflict and collaboration (optional)

A long-established neo-Nazi website incorporates an image of the Parthenon into its logo\, and rioters wore Spartan helmets in the January 6\, 2021\, attack on the U.S. Capitol. These juxtapositions may appear incongruous to people who associate the ancient world with enlightened political ideals and sophisticated philosophical inquiry. But\, as Curtis Dozier points out in The White Pedestal: How White Nationalists Use Ancient Greece and Rome to Justify Hate\, it’s hard to imagine a historical period better suited to rhetorical use by white nationalists. Part introduction to contemporary white nationalist thought\, part exploration of ancient racism and xenophobia\, and part intellectual history of the political entanglements of academic study of the past\, this book reveals that contemporary white nationalist intellectuals know much more about history than many people assume—and they deploy this knowledge with disturbing success.” – Morteza Hajizadeh\, Ph.D. graduate in English\, University of Auckland in New Zealand. \nAbout Curtis Dozier \nCurtis Dozier received his Ph.D. in Classics from the University of California\, Berkeley in 2008 and has taught at Vassar College since then.
