SUMMARY:Hudson Valley Power Authority Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:Shrestha to hold town hall on public takeover of Central Hudson\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA few days ago\, the Public Service Commission approved yet another rate hike for Central Hudson customers: \n“Central Hudson\, which provides service to 315\,000 electric customers and 90\,000 gas customers in New York’s Mid-Hudson Valley\, originally sought a base delivery revenue increase for the 12-months ending June 30\, 2026\, of $47.2 million — 8.8 percent delivery or 4.6 percent total revenue and $15.3 million — 9.4 percent delivery or 5.8 percent total revenue — for electric and gas\, respectively. The joint proposal covers a three-year term through June 30\, 2028. \nThe adopted joint proposal will result in an electric rate increase on a total bill basis for the average residential customer of 3.47 percent in the first year\, 3.47 percent in the second year\, and 3.23 percent in the third year. For an average residential gas customer\, the increase will be 5.3 percent in the first year\, 7.19 percent in the second year\, and 7.27 percent in the third year.” \n“This is precisely why we introduced the Hudson Valley Power Authority Act — to get rid of Central Hudson’s investor-owners altogether and replace Central Hudson with a publicly-owned utility that is not for profit\,” says New York State Assembly member Sarahana Shrestha. \nShrestha and New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey have introduced the Hudson Valley Power Authority Act to create “a state-owned corporation\, the Hudson Valley Power Authority (HVPA)\, that is authorized to acquire Central Hudson and run it as a publicly-owned and democratic energy with no profit motive.” \n“Companies like Fortis treat our energy system like it’s their piggy bank. Their subsidiaries like Central Hudson charge high rates and do little to prioritize our needs. It’s time to take our power back and replace Central Hudson with a publicly-owned utility that charges low rates and invests in a resilient grid to provide energy as a public good. We can do this by passing our state bill\, the Hudson Valley Power Authority Act (A2127 Shrestha/S2026 Hinchey). \nWith public ownership\, we’ll take the energy system out of the greedy hands of corporate boardrooms\, and put it in the hands of experts and the people who rely on it.” \nOn Thursday\, August 21\, Shrestha will hold a town hall discussing the Hudson Valley Power Authority Act at the Starr Library\, 68 West Market Street\, Rhinebeck. Doors open at 5:30pm\, and the presentation will begin at 6pm\, followed by an opportunity to ask Assemblymember Shrestha questions. RSVP \nAnother Hudson Valley Power Authority Town Hall will take place on Wednesday\, August 27\, 2025 at 6pm at the Rosendale Community Center. RSVP.

SUMMARY:Navigating Conflict: Building Resilience for Your Working Relationships (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Navigating Conflict: Building Resilience for Your Working Relationships \nBegins September 3\, 3:30-5:30pm\nLocation: Online \nAre you ready to dedicate some attention to a fresh approach to your working relationships? \nWhen we pour ourselves into work we care about\, we want to know it matters. We want to know that our collective efforts to bring about needed changes and work toward Just Transition will be fruitful. How disheartening\, exhausting\, and frustrating it is to see our hard work fall short as conflict slows down the momentum of our work or\, worse yet\, leads us to step away from collaborative efforts. \nDuring this 8-week\, online workshop\, we will explore practical strategies for undoing domination in ourselves\, our communication\, our relationships\, and our collaborations. Each two-hour session will include interactive content and practices to engage with real-time examples from your work and life. You will have the opportunity to be paired up with another participant for practice in between sessions. Because a shared experience with colleagues can make it easier to bring this language and these skills into your working relationships\, we encourage you to sign up with one or more of the people you work with! \nINFO + REGISTRATION

SUMMARY:Chronostasis Exhibition Opening and Conversation with the Artist
DESCRIPTION:Chronostasis is a perceptual illusion in which time appears to slow. Featuring over sixty works added to the Loeb’s collection between 2020–2025\, Chronostasia likewise extends and recirculates time. Some works revisit the past; others offer ways of seeing that move beyond chronology. To mark the exhibition opening\, we are delighted to welcome artist Sky Hopinka (Ho-Chunk Nation/Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians) for a conversation with Vassar Professor of English Molly McGlennen and curator Alyx Raz ’16. \nThe program begins with a reception in the Loeb’s atrium and galleries starting at 4:30 p.m.\, followed by the conversation at 5:30 p.m. next door in Taylor Hall\, Room 102. \nAbout Sky Hopinka\nSky Hopinka was born and raised in Ferndale\, Washington and spent a number of years in Palm Springs and Riverside\, California\, Portland\, Oregon\, and Milwaukee\, Wisconsin. In Portland he studied and taught chinuk wawa\, a language indigenous to the Lower Columbia River Basin. His video\, photo\, and text work centers around personal positions of Indigenous homeland and landscape\, designs of language as containers of culture expressed through personal\, documentary\, and non fiction forms of media. \nHopinka’s films have played at various festivals including Sundance\, Toronto International Film Festival\, Ann Arbor\, Courtisane Festival\, Punto de Vista\, and the New York Film Festival. His work was a part of the 2017 Whitney Biennial\, the 2018 FRONT Triennial and Prospect.5 in 2021. He was a guest curator at the 2019 Whitney Biennial and participated in Cosmopolis #2 at the Centre Pompidou. He has had a solo exhibition at the Center for Curatorial Studies\, Bard College\, in 2020 and in 2022 at LUMA in Arles\, France. Hopinka is the recipient of the Infinity Award in Art from the International Center and the Alpert Award for Film/Video and fellowships including The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University\, Sundance Art of Nonfiction\, Art Matters\, The Guggenheim Foundation\, and The Forge Project. In the fall of 2022\, he received a MacArthur Fellowship for his work as a visual artist and filmmaker. Hopinka is currently an Assistant Professor of Film at Harvard University.

SUMMARY:City of Poughkeepsie Local Planning Committee Meeting regarding the Poughkeepsie Downtown Revitalization Initiative
DESCRIPTION:The City of Poughkeepsie was awarded $10 million in funding as the Mid-Hudson Region winner of the eighth round of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI). Poughkeepsie will begin the process of developing a Strategic Investment Plan to revitalize its downtown with up to $300\,000 in planning funds from the $10 million DRI grant. A Local Planning Committee made up of municipal representatives\, community leaders\, and other stakeholders will lead the effort\, supported by a team of private sector experts and state planners. The Strategic Investment Plan (SIP) will examine local assets and opportunities to identify economic development\, transportation\, housing\, and community projects that align with Poughkeepsie’s vision for downtown revitalization and that are poised for implementation. The Plan will also guide the investment of DRI grant funds in revitalization projects that will advance the community’s vision and that can leverage and expand upon the state’s $10 million investment. This webpage provides information on the DRI program and how to participate in the public engagement process. \n

SUMMARY:6th Annual Attica Community Remembrance Day BBQ
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 6th Annual Attica Uprising Community Remembrance Day on Saturday\, September 13\, 2025\, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Poughkeepsie Waterfront. \nThis powerful community gathering honors the 1971 Attica Uprising\, when more than 1\,200 incarcerated people at Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York organized one of the most significant prison rebellions in U.S. history. The uprising was a demand for dignity\, basic human rights\, and an end to the brutal conditions behind prison walls. While the state responded with deadly force killing 39 people—the resistance of the Attica Brothers continues to echo through the work of those fighting for justice today. \nThis year’s theme\, “Echoes Behind the Wall\, Fires at the Border\,” calls us to confront a global carceral regime that is not broken\, but working exactly as designed. From prison walls to border fences\, we recognize that incarceration and displacement are connected struggles. This is a call to abolition beyond prison\, beyond citizenship\, and beyond the nation-state a call to build a world where no one is locked in or locked out. \nWe invite you to stand with us in remembrance and in resistance. \n\nWhat to Expect at the Event:\nFree Food for All Attendees\nLive Music and Performances\nHealing Clinic & Wellness Space\nArt Show Featuring Work by Incarcerated Artists\nOpportunities to Get Involved in Social Justice Campaigns\nCommunity Organizations Sharing Resources\n\nPlease fill out the form below to let us know if you plan to attend. All are welcome\, and no one will be turned away. \n\nPlease email prisonersbraintrust@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Learning Session: Understanding Harmful Algal Blooms on the Hudson
DESCRIPTION:The Hudson is experiencing its largest harmful algal bloom (HAB) on record. A green sheen of toxic bacteria centered near Kingston is covering the river and has been observed at various locations primarily from Poughkeepsie to Germantown. These outbreaks of blue-green algae can release toxins\, threaten fish and wildlife\, and raise serious concerns for people and pets. \nJoin Riverkeeper’s experts for a lunchtime session on ‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌Tuesday\, September 23\, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌\, to learn what harmful algal blooms are\, why they matter\, and what the recent bloom in the Hudson tells us about the river’s health.
