SUMMARY:Just Transition Primer
DESCRIPTION:Just Transition Primer\nFriday\, March 14\, 2025\n12:00-2:00pm\nOnline \nLet’s come together online to align understanding and action in support of effective\, collective responses to the moment we are living in. \nSoaring prices for housing and food make it increasingly difficult to secure our basic needs. Wildfire smoke and damaging storms are commonplace. Our entrenched political divides are laced with conflict and create a sense of insecurity. How do we make sense of these realities? Where can we glimpse the kind of possibility worth coming together to work for? This workshop provides an opportunity to connect\, explore a shared vision of Just Transition\, and consider the question: What will it take to build systems centered on care for each other and our shared home? What would it mean for many of us in the Mahicantuck (Hudson) Valley to be focused on social and ecological well-being? Join us online\, in community\, to deepen your understanding of the Just Transition framework\, principles and practices. Through video\, reflection\, story sharing\, and small group discussion\, you will: \n\nSee people from across the country describing aspects of Just Transition\nHear how other participants respond to the framework\nConnect your own experience to extractive and regenerative economic paradigms\nGain a sense of the framework\, principles and practices\, and where they come from\nDiscuss ways you are drawn toward weaving one or more Just Transition principles and practices into your Good Work\n\nMore information here. Registration is required and requests a contribution of up to $25 to help underwrite the cost of offering this workshop.

SUMMARY:Gallery 40: "Talisman" Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Talisman: The World of Magic \nThe exhibition explores the world of magic and dreams where boundaries between illusion and reality are fading into each other. \nWe want the visitor to escape reality and enter a space where class\, race\, gender\, and power politics are transcended\, and we are instead nurtured by the supernatural elements present in all cultures across distance and time. \nBecause from time-to-time we all need some form of talismanic protection. \nAs individuals\, but even as a collective\, as a community\, as a world aflame we need something greater than ourselves to protect us; perhaps from ourselves. The artwork presented in the exhibition wants to surprise the visitor\, wants to influence the sense of reality\, and transform moments of our lives into something magical and whimsical. \nParticipating artists: \nJennifer Axinn-Weiss\, Paola Bari\, Mary Ann Glass\, Jennifer Prevatt\, Andres San Millan\, Lisa Winika. \nOpening Reception: \nSaturday\, March 15\, 2025 5-7 pm \nThis project is made possible with funds from the New York State Legislature and administered by Arts Mid-Hudson.

SUMMARY:Fall Kill Creative Works: Sarah Hussaini of Not Work Related
DESCRIPTION:Visiting Artist Series\nSUNDAY\, MARCH 16\, 2025.\n10:30am – 11:30am – Lecture and Q + A\n12pm – 2:00pm – Demonstration\n  \n\nABOUT THE ARTIST\nSarah Hussaini is a former architect with a master’s degree from Columbia University; she spent five years working as an architect before returning to ceramics. In 2017\, she embarked on a new project with the launch of her ceramics studio\, Not Work Related. Combining her technical architectural background with the handmade nature of ceramics\, Sarah creates intricate and meticulously patterned pieces that occupy a space between handmade and digitally designed. She seamlessly integrates 2D illustrations and 3D models to map intricate patterns onto her work. This fusion of disciplines results in highly detailed ceramic pieces that showcase her dedication to craftsmanship and artistic precision.\n\n\nLECTURE: THE WORKFLOW OF ART\, LABOR\, AND LIVELIHOOD\nOperating at the intersection of ceramics\, design\, and business\, Not Work Related is a contemporary ceramics studio committed to both precision craftsmanship and financial transparency. This lecture will address often overlooked aspects of creative labor\, examining both visible and invisible contributions to the work over the years. We will explore the complexities of quantifying artistic efforts and challenge the traditional taboo surrounding the financial motivations of artists\, acknowledging that creative expression and earning a living are intrinsically linked.\nDEMONSTRATION: SLIP CASTING MADE SIMPLE\nSlip casting has become an integral part of the Not Work Related studio\, during this demonstration Sarah will cover the basics of slip casting including the process of mold making\, securing a form\, creating a reservoir and the plaster mixing process. She will also bring a small cup mold to demonstrate how she ‘demolds’ her pieces. Together students will each make a one part mold of a small bowl. For the purpose of this class\, the object will be provided.\nWEBSITE\nYou can see more of Sarah’s work HERE\n\n\nGOOD TO KNOW\nAll artist lectures and demonstrations will take place at Fall Kill Clay Studio\, 485 Main Street\, Poughkeepsie.\nTickets are free\, and first come\, first served. If you reserve a ticket but are unable to attend please contact Jennaway\nWe appreciate your prompt arrival and ask that you silence your mobile devices for the duration of the presentation. \nLectures and demonstrations are for adults over 18 years old. Maximum of two tickets per person. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Solidarity Civics: Balancing Resistance & Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Solidarity Civics: Balancing Resistance & Resilience\nMarch 20\, 6:00-7:30pm\nLocation: The GWI Greenhouse: 65 St James Street\, Kingston\, NY 12401 \nHow can we build grassroots power and community-led mutual support to ensure we stand in resistance and in solidarity? \nIn response to the avalanche of executive orders\, a raft of lawsuits has emerged as part of the resistance\, as institutions scramble to protect programs and people\, exposing the illegal nature of some of these orders. In their wake\, the immediate suspension of funding\, jobs\, and programs across the federal government have put immigrant rights\, abortion rights\, LGBTQIA+ rights at risk and have started the project of rescinding commitments to social equity\, racial justice\, free speech\, and environmental repair. \nIn the next community forum in this series\, we will focus on finding the balance between resistance and resilience. \n\nThis is a free event. Registration is required. \nINFO + REGISTRATION

SUMMARY:State of the City Address by Mayor Flowers
DESCRIPTION:Mayor Yvonne Flowers will deliver the State of the City address on next Friday night\, March 21\, at The Bardavon 1869 Opera House\, 35 Market St.\, Poughkeepsie. \nThe mayor will be highlighting the city’s accomplishments\, key priorities\, and vision for the future. \nMayor Flowers began her term in January 2024\, becoming the first African American to hold the position. She has focused on working with partners on housing options addressing the homeless issue\, spurring economic development and seeking more grants for the city\, among other initiatives in her first 14 months in office. \n“I look forward to providing the public with important updates on these topics and so much more\,” said Mayor Flowers. “We have made great headway so far\, but we realize there is far more to do. SUMMARY:NYC Open Data Week
DESCRIPTION:About Open Data Week: \nOpen Data Week is an annual festival of community-driven events organized and produced by the NYC Open Data Team at the Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI)\, BetaNYC\, and Data Through Design. \nEvery March\, New Yorkers come together online and across the five boroughs to celebrate public data in New York City and mark the anniversary of the City’s first open data law\, which was signed on March 7\, 2012. Coincidentally\, the first weekend of March is also International Open Data Day. Throughout Open Data Week\, we rally NYC’s civic tech and open data communities and offer opportunities for more people to learn about and engage with municipal public data. \nThe 2025 Festival kicks off at the opening of Data Through Design‘s annual art exhibition. Throughout the week\, participants can engage with NYC Open Data at dozens of virtual and in-person events. We’ll close out the week with BetaNYC’s annual civic tech conference\, NYC School of Data\, taking place at CUNY School of Law in Long Island City. \nCheck out the program of events here! \nLooking for past events and recordings? Find them here.
