SUMMARY:Solidarity Civics: Responding to Executive Disorder
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 20\, 2025\n6:00-7:30pm\n@ GWI Greenhouse\, 65 St. James St\, Kingston \nWhat can we do in the aftermath of the president signing 200+ executive orders? How can we come together to process and respond to the real and lasting damage that could result from these regressive actions? How can we build grassroots power and community-led mutual support to ensure we stand in resistance and in solidarity? \nWe believe that it is more imperative than ever that we emerge from our individual attempts at staying grounded (as important as they are) and join forces. \nGood Work Institute invites you to a gathering. Our purpose is to hold space\, a forum\, for us to strengthen our understanding of what is happening and cultivate a collective sense of focus and action. We are joining the chorus of voices calling for local\, regional\, and state-wide networks to rise up to fill the gaps\, to resist a narrative of helplessness\, and to promote instead a tangible alternative to the chaos. We want to support and encourage a community response – with deep democracy at its core – exercising our ability to work collaboratively together\, to make decisions through a lens of wisdom and care\, and move into action. We will not be obeying in advance. \nIn this forum\, we will: \n\nLearn about the executive orders\, what they say and what they mean for our communities\nHave a chance to hear from each other\, voicing our feelings and insights in a facilitated circle\nShare opportunities to move towards Good Work and solidarity\n\nFree\, registration required.

SUMMARY:Artist\, Suzanne Jackson in conversation with Lisa Gail Collins at The Loeb
DESCRIPTION:Suzanne Jackson (b. 1944\, St. Louis\, Missouri) lives and works between Savannah\, Georgia\, and St. Remy\, New York. For nearly five decades\, the artist has worked experimentally across mediums\, including drawing\, painting\, poetry\, dance\, theater\, and costume design. In the early 1970s\, Jackson worked as an artist and teacher in Los Angeles\, where she engaged a community of artist peers and established Gallery 32\, showcasing figures like David Hammons\, Senga Nengudi\, and Betye Saar. Jackson’s recent works are composed of pure acrylic and found materials\, dispensing with canvas and allowing the paintings to move off the wall and exist within the space of the viewer. The artist will have her first major retrospective from 2025 to 2026\, organized by SFMOMA and the Walker Art Center and traveling to the MFA Boston. \nSponsored by the Vassar Art Department. The event is free and open to the public. \n  \n

SUMMARY:COVID Creative Coalition
DESCRIPTION:ATTENTION\, “Hudson Valley” COVID-informed creatives! Join Celebrate845 on Tuesday\, March 11 at 6PM EST on Zoom for a community meeting. No artistic experience required. Read on for intentions & access info! \nIntention (by facilitator Amanda W): What would you like people to know about covid? And how could we use more creative mediums to deliver that information locally? Inspired by ACT UP’s Gran Fury and drawing on activism that seeks to provide health interventions when government agencies fail to message critical information comprehensively (or at all)\, let’s put our talents to use and help our communities. What could we create to better inform those around us and encourage more covid competency? \nBecause despite what many people want to believe in their urgency to get “back to normal\,” we’re still in a pandemic. Yet\, we’re watching the erasure of covid and long covid in real time with the current administration\, and prior to that\, a complete failure of the CDC to accurately share the risks and repercussions of repeat covid infections in any meaningful way. Let’s fill that gap. We can produce materials that educate our communities about the dangers of covid and encourage them to adopt more covid-competent behaviors. And we can do so in a way that ideally feels creatively edifying. Join us for an introductory meeting to discuss our potential first project and lay the groundwork for what will hopefully become an ongoing\, multi-city effort. \nAccess info: fully virtual on Zoom. If you need suggestions on where to access free WiFi\, let us know. No expectation to have video on. This will be a conversation with the intention of collectively co-building a working group. All ideas\, ages & abilities welcomed. Zoom captions available. \nZoom link will be shared day-of at Celebrate845.com/links \nAnd non-Hudson Valley folks are welcomed to attend\, connect & get inspired\, but we’ll be centering building our efforts in the HV. Maybe breakout rooms by locale!

SUMMARY:Just Transition Primer
DESCRIPTION:Just Transition Primer\nFriday\, March 14\, 2025\n12:00-2:00pm\nOnline \nLet’s come together online to align understanding and action in support of effective\, collective responses to the moment we are living in. \nSoaring prices for housing and food make it increasingly difficult to secure our basic needs. Wildfire smoke and damaging storms are commonplace. Our entrenched political divides are laced with conflict and create a sense of insecurity. How do we make sense of these realities? Where can we glimpse the kind of possibility worth coming together to work for? This workshop provides an opportunity to connect\, explore a shared vision of Just Transition\, and consider the question: What will it take to build systems centered on care for each other and our shared home? What would it mean for many of us in the Mahicantuck (Hudson) Valley to be focused on social and ecological well-being? Join us online\, in community\, to deepen your understanding of the Just Transition framework\, principles and practices. Through video\, reflection\, story sharing\, and small group discussion\, you will: \n\nSee people from across the country describing aspects of Just Transition\nHear how other participants respond to the framework\nConnect your own experience to extractive and regenerative economic paradigms\nGain a sense of the framework\, principles and practices\, and where they come from\nDiscuss ways you are drawn toward weaving one or more Just Transition principles and practices into your Good Work\n\nMore information here. Registration is required and requests a contribution of up to $25 to help underwrite the cost of offering this workshop.

SUMMARY:Gallery 40: "Talisman" Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Talisman: The World of Magic \nThe exhibition explores the world of magic and dreams where boundaries between illusion and reality are fading into each other. \nWe want the visitor to escape reality and enter a space where class\, race\, gender\, and power politics are transcended\, and we are instead nurtured by the supernatural elements present in all cultures across distance and time. \nBecause from time-to-time we all need some form of talismanic protection. \nAs individuals\, but even as a collective\, as a community\, as a world aflame we need something greater than ourselves to protect us; perhaps from ourselves. The artwork presented in the exhibition wants to surprise the visitor\, wants to influence the sense of reality\, and transform moments of our lives into something magical and whimsical. \nParticipating artists: \nJennifer Axinn-Weiss\, Paola Bari\, Mary Ann Glass\, Jennifer Prevatt\, Andres San Millan\, Lisa Winika. \nOpening Reception: \nSaturday\, March 15\, 2025 5-7 pm \nThis project is made possible with funds from the New York State Legislature and administered by Arts Mid-Hudson.
