SUMMARY:Past\, Present\, and Future: Supporting our Changing Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Past\, Present\, and Future: Supporting our Changing Landscapes \nBiological communities are always in a state of change. By exploring how plant communities in the Mid-Hudson region have changed in the past\, we gain an important perspective on current patterns. How has the gain and loss of species over time shaped our landscape? What can we learn from previous ecological restoration projects? And what practical approaches can we take now to support overall biodiversity in this region and beyond? \nDr. Meg Ronsheim is a Professor of Biology at Vassar College. Her current area of research focuses on the impact and management of invasive vines\, forest regeneration\, and restoration ecology. A number of you will recognize her from the wonderful walk and talk she gave us at Locust Grove last spring. Bring your native plant questions for a lively discussion. \nThe second annual meeting of Wild Ones Mid-Hudson Valley will follow Meg’s talk. You will learn more about our work and opportunities to get involved. Snacks and coffee available. \nAll are invited! \nRegistration is required. Register here! \nIf you have any questions\, please contact wildonesmhv@gmail.com. \nSubscribe to our monthly newsletter to receive program announcements.

SUMMARY:The Lenape People in the Hudson Valley
DESCRIPTION:“The Lenape People in the Hudson Valley” (Saturday\, Nov. 15\, 1 p.m.\, at Mount Gulian Historic Site\, Beacon): For more than 12\,000 years\, the ancestors of the Lenape culture lived and thrived in Lenapehoking\, the land of the Lenape\, which included the Hudson Valley. Local tribes such as the Wappinger\, Esopus and Tappan encountered Henry Hudson along the Mahicannituck in 1609. The Mount Gulian property was identified as the site of temporary Lenape encampments\, and was also the site of the Rombout Patent of 1683\, which was the selling of much of Dutchess County by the Lenape to colonial settlers. Interaction with the Europeans forced the Lenape to develop survival strategies\, resulting in a group leaving the area to live elsewhere. This talk\, given by Harv Hilowitz\, a Contributing Scholar for the Maritime Museum in Kingston\, will focus on Lenape life-ways before the Contact Period and delve into the Lenape diaspora\, and the current renaissance and return to the area. To purchase tickets\, call (845) 831-8172 or email info@mountgulian.org. Payment may be made the day of the event. \n
