Beacon Climate Smart Communities Program Support with the Center for Economic and Environmental Partnership

This opportunity is available during the Spring 2022 semester. This opportunity can be conducted virtually and is only available for CEL credit.

Center for Economic and Environmental Partnership (CEEP)’s mission is to serve as a bridge between economic and environmental perspectives. We aim to encourage evaluation, development, and implementation of policies and programs supportive of the environment and the environmental industry. Our Matchmaker and Management Program connects early career professionals with local organizations to advance sustainability efforts. Position Description:

CEEP is seeking a CEL student to support the City of Beacon’s
Climate Smart Community (CSC) Coordinator. Over the course of this 3-4 month project, the student will provide general support to the CSC Coordinator, and potentially support the following projects:

  1. Supporting Beacon pilot composting program. This would include developing educational materials, creating sign up lists, and conducting outreach. The student would maintain a data platform/tracking plan and create a survey for residents to share feedback on community composting and backyard bin usage.
  2. Researching potential areas of collaboration between the City and School District.
  3. Organizing community campaigns on heating and cooling systems, as well as community solar programs.
  4. Producing the seasonal sustainability newsletter and supporting the Conservation Advisory Committee and Green Beacon Coalition in revitalized Sustainability website and resource platform.

The exact projects to be completed by the intern are to be determined in discussion with the CSC Coordinator, based on the student’s interest areas and prior experience.

Desired Skills: 

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Strong communication skills; ability to interface with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Skilled writer and editor, capable of producing public facing materials
  • Serious interest in the environmental field and local climate solutions
  • Experience in data collection, survey implementation, and data analysis a big plus
  • Experience in independent research work a plus
