Archival and Research Position with Vassar Temple

This opportunity is available during the Spring 2022 semester. This opportunity can be conducted virtually and is only available for CEL credit.

Vassar Temple, the oldest Reform synagogue in the Hudson Valley, is approaching its 175th anniversary. They are establishing an electronic document room to preserve and organize their historic archives, containing extensive administrative, financial, property, mission-related, and other records. The bulk of this information is being painstakingly digitized and organized, having been previously in raw form such as documents, photographs, and newspaper clippings. 

First, with historic information available via the internet and other outside resources (e.g. records of old area newspapers, items from the local Historical Society, etc.). Vassar Temple hopes to capture their presence and influence in the community over the decades. They are particularly interested in biographical information about their past Rabbis back into the mid-1800’s.

Second, with information about the historic context of Vassar Temple’s 175 years and how the different time periods in American history and culture impacted American Jewish practice and denominations.

Third, with current information about community’s demographics.

Each of these goals lend themselves to focused student research with the final product taking a written form to be determined in consultation with a professional archivist who is providing support.

All of this information will become part of their electronic resource and be used to preserve their legacy, to support grant writing, and to provide material for an intended year-long celebration of the 175th which is envisioned to include educational and cultural events in partnership with local organizations such as the College.
