{"id":1364,"date":"2015-01-29T12:43:39","date_gmt":"2015-01-29T17:43:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/musicalurbanism\/?p=1364"},"modified":"2015-01-29T12:43:39","modified_gmt":"2015-01-29T17:43:39","slug":"syllabus-for-2015-musical-urbanism-seminar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/musicalurbanism\/2015\/01\/29\/syllabus-for-2015-musical-urbanism-seminar\/","title":{"rendered":"syllabus for 2015 Musical Urbanism seminar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m excited to announce that I&#8217;m teaching an undergraduate seminar in Musical Urbanism at Vassar College again this semester, with my colleague <a href=\"http:\/\/english.vassar.edu\/bios\/huhsu.html\" target=\"_blank\">Hua Hsu<\/a>. This is a multidisciplinary course housed in the <a href=\"http:\/\/urbanstudies.vassar.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Urban Studies Program<\/a>, taught by an urban sociologist (myself) and literature professor\/critic (Hsu).<\/p>\n<p>We revised the syllabus significantly from <a href=\"http:\/\/faculty.vassar.edu\/lenevare\/archive\/2011\/urbs346\/\" target=\"_blank\">the last time we taught it<\/a> to focus more on promoting students&#8217; original inquiry and intellectual production on topics of their own choice. This means, for instance, assigning texts early in the semester, like Patti Smith&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Just Kids<\/em>, that aren&#8217;t driven by scholarly agendas to see what kinds of themes and narratives resonate with them. I think Hsu and I learned from the last time that frontloading the schedule with theory constricts the range of multidisciplinary approaches and personal interests that students might bring to the texts and assignments.<\/p>\n<p>Our paper assignments are still under construction but will organize opportunities for original research, multimedia formats (e.g., annotated musical playlists), and creative writing.
