{"id":1159,"date":"2014-02-25T15:31:06","date_gmt":"2014-02-25T20:31:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/musicalurbanism\/?p=1159"},"modified":"2014-02-25T15:31:06","modified_gmt":"2014-02-25T20:31:06","slug":"community-food-assessment-research-in-poughkeepsie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/musicalurbanism\/2014\/02\/25\/community-food-assessment-research-in-poughkeepsie\/","title":{"rendered":"community food assessment research in Poughkeepsie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the Fall of 2010 I began serving as primary co-investigator on a community food assessment (CFA) in the city of Poughkeepsie, New York.\u00a0 A remarkable coalition of local groups came together under the title <a href=\"http:\/\/poughkeepsieplenty.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Poughkeepsie Plenty<\/a>, including the <a href=\"http:\/\/farmproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Poughkeepsie Farm Project<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dutchessoutreach.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dutchess Outreach<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.co.dutchess.ny.us\/countygov\/departments\/health\/hdindex.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Dutchess County Dept. of Health<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccedutchess.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess County<\/a>.\u00a0 Under the direction of Susan Grove, then director of the Poughkeepsie Farm Project, Poughkeepsie Plenty secured a U.S. Department of Agriculture &#8220;Hunger Free Communities&#8221; grant and set out to work.<\/p>\n<p>My job was to design the CFA&#8217;s empirical studies and send Vassar College students plus other community volunteers out to gather data: a city-wide household survey, focus-group interviews, fieldwork in city stores, etc.\u00a0 Our findings were sobering \u2014 among other things, <strong>about 1 in 4 city households were food insecure<\/strong> by USDA standards \u2014 and released in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/doc\/120982748\/Food-Security-and-Choice-Poughkeepsie-Plenty-Community-Food-Assessment\" target=\"_blank\">100-page final report<\/a>, released in January 2013 to the Poughkeepsie Plenty team and the public at large.<\/p>\n<p>Today I&#8217;m excited to announce two new documents intended to disseminate the CFA&#8217;s finds and spark action in Poughkeepsie, the Hudson Valley and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>The first is a new discussion brief published by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newpaltz.edu\/crreo\/\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Research, Regional Education (CRREO)<\/a> and Outreach at SUNY-New Paltz.\u00a0 Co-written writh Susan Grove and CRREO researchers KT Tobin and Joshua Simons, this 20-page report presents the CFA findings in bold relief, with some especially engaging maps and charts.\u00a0 It joins <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newpaltz.edu\/crreo\/discussion_briefs.html\" target=\"_blank\">other CRREO discussion briefs<\/a> in signalling to regional and state policy makers the broad problems of food insecurity throughout the Hudson Valley.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newpaltz.edu\/crreo\/discussion_brief_11.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">You can download the discussion brief here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/musicalurbanism\/files\/2014\/02\/1888851_10152054100033300_1429913183_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1160\" alt=\"1888851_10152054100033300_1429913183_o\" src=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/musicalurbanism\/files\/2014\/02\/1888851_10152054100033300_1429913183_o-791x1024.jpg\" width=\"475\" height=\"614\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/musicalurbanism\/files\/2014\/02\/1888851_10152054100033300_1429913183_o-791x1024.jpg 791w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/musicalurbanism\/files\/2014\/02\/1888851_10152054100033300_1429913183_o-231x300.jpg 231w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/musicalurbanism\/files\/2014\/02\/1888851_10152054100033300_1429913183_o.jpg 1582w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The second is the Poughkeepsie Plenty &#8220;Food Equality Newspaper,&#8221;
