LC molecules are anisotropic to light, meaning that they exhibit properties with different effects when oriented in varied directions (Yeh 5).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1986\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/magnes\/files\/2012\/04\/Nematic-Phase.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1986\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1986\" src=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/magnes\/files\/2012\/04\/Nematic-Phase-300x178.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/magnes\/files\/2012\/04\/Nematic-Phase-300x178.png 300w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/magnes\/files\/2012\/04\/Nematic-Phase.png 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1986\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">These are very rough artistic interpretations of the nematic phase alignment that I made in Mathematica as inspired by Fig. 1.9 on pg. 12 of Liquid Crystal Display Drivers: Techniques and Circuits. <\/p><\/div>\n<p>We will focus on the nematic phase (see Figure) of liquid crystal, as when aligned, the optical properties of the nematic phase are helpful in liquid crystal displays.\u00a0Nematic phases are made up of rod-shaped molecules that are ordered with their long axes (the ones used with LCD are uniaxial) approximately parallel (Cristaldi 12).<\/p>\n<p>References:<\/p>\n<p>Cristaldi, David, Pennisi, Salvatorre and Francesco Pulvirenti. <em>Liquid Crystal Display Drivers: Techniques and Circuits<\/em>.
