The devices, which produce <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/graphic\/2010\/01\/03\/GR2010010302330.html\">\u201cnaked\u201d images<\/a> of passengers through the use of radio waves and X-rays, are able to detect plastic and chemical explosives similar to that used by \u201cunderwear bomber\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/stories\/2009\/12\/27\/national\/main6028366.shtml\">Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab<\/a> in December 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Critics, however, suggest that full-body scanners <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2010\/03\/17\/AR2010031700649.html\">may not have detected<\/a> Abdulmutallab\u2019s explosives, calling the overall effectiveness of the technology into question. Moreover, experts have yet to reach a consensus on the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.discovery.com\/human\/body-scanner-reports-contradictory-safety-concerns-revived-110316.html\">health risks<\/a> posed by the devices.<\/p>\n<p>We intend to conduct a theoretical investigation of the safety and efficacy of these machines in order to determine how potential gains in air safety measure up to potential losses in personal health and privacy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Controversy erupted in 2010 when the use of full body scanners was included in the enhanced security procedures implemented by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
