SHORT STORIES IN BLACK LITERATURE

In this course, we will be discussing short stories by Black writers. The emphasis will be a discussion of cultural, feminist, psychological, and historical analysis of the stories. We will discuss “Sweat” by Zora Neale Hurston, “The Man Who Was Almost a Man” by Richard Wright, “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabrielle Marquez, “Dead Man’s Path” by Chinua Achebe, “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker, “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin, “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, and “Battle Royal” by Ralph Ellison.

Dr. Jacqueline Goffe-McNish was a professor of English and Humanities at Dutchess Community College for thirty-two years. She was the Chief Diversity Officer and supervised the teaching of English in high schools. She has written two textbooks: Composition in Fifteen Weeks (Kona Publishers) and Analysis, Approaches, and Appeals in Introductory Literature (Kendall Hunt Publishers). She has received awards from multiple local communities, the SUNY Chancellor 25 Award, and the DCC Endowed Chair Award. She is the superintendent of Sunday school at BMBC and teaches the adult Sunday school class. She is a member of the Poughkeepsie chapter of the American Association of University Women.
