{"id":1054,"date":"2025-06-26T16:33:43","date_gmt":"2025-06-26T20:33:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/kmclaughlin\/?page_id=1054"},"modified":"2025-08-05T16:11:21","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T20:11:21","slug":"cure_ssgcid","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/kmclaughlin\/research\/cure_ssgcid\/","title":{"rendered":"Emerging Pathogens Proteomic Characterization"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/kmclaughlin\/research\/#reslist\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"119\">Return to Main Research Page<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>In partnership with the&nbsp;National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)&#8217;s Seattle Structural Genomics Centers for Infectious Diseases (SSGCID), we are biochemically investigating previously uncharacterized proteins from a range of bacterial human pathogens, starting with&nbsp;<em>Rickettsia felis<\/em>, <em>Legionella pneumoniae <\/em>and <em>Mycoliciobacterium smegmatis<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have published <em><strong>five papers<\/strong><\/em> so far (see below), with a paper comparing inorganic pyrophosphatases from <em>Neisseria gonorrhoeae<\/em> and <em>Chlamydia trachomatis<\/em> currently in preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of this research is done in Dr. McLaughlin&#8217;s Protein Crystallography (Chem\/Bioc 295) class which is a CURE (Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience). Funding for this class is supported by her RCSA Cottrell Scholar Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>See her published 2021 editorial in <em>Structural Dynamics<\/em> detailing the genesis of the protein crystallography CURE: &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.aip.org\/aca\/sdy\/article\/8\/2\/020406\/365904\">Developing a macromolecular crystallography driven CURE<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally in 2023, Dr. McLaughlin was interviewed about the strategy and outcomes of her protein crystallography CURE by Dr. Jon Agirre, editor of <em>Acta Crystallographia F<\/em>, here: &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.iucr.org\/f\/issues\/2023\/10\/00\/me6249\/index.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/journals.iucr.org\/f\/issues\/2023\/10\/00\/me6249\/index.html\">Using structural genomics depositions in undergraduate teaching of protein crystallography: everybody wins<\/a>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Publication milestones\/timeline: <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">April 2025: <\/span><\/strong>Chi Nguyen &#8217;26 and Nico Lloyd-Silveman &#8217;25 presented their research from the Protein Crystallography class at ASBMB in Chicago IL!
