He received a Ph.D. from Cornell University in 2000\u00a0where he worked in the field of inorganic chemistry with <a href=\"https:\/\/chemistry.cornell.edu\/peter-t-wolczanski\">Peter T. Wolczanski<\/a>. After completing a postdoctoral appointment with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.columbia.edu\/cu\/chemistry\/groups\/parkin\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gerard Parkin<\/a> at Columbia University, he spent time as a substitute assistant professor at the City University of New York\u2019s John Jay College of Criminal Justice before returning to Vassar as a faculty member in 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Tanski is the Principal Investigator on grants from the National Science Foundation (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=0521237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NSF &#8211; MRI 0521237,<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=0911324\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NSF-RUI &#8211; 0911324<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=1526982\">NSF-MRI \u00a0&#8211;\u00a01526982<\/a>) supporting his research, the single crystal X-ray diffraction facility, and a 400 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer.\u00a0 At Vassar Dr. Tanski served as the Chair of the Chemistry Department (2018 &#8211; 2020 &amp; 2011 &#8211; 2014), is a member of the Pre-Medical Advisory Committee, and served as the Director of <a href=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/accas\/\">Asprey CCAS<\/a>\u00a02022-2025.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Tanski completed two terms as a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/usnccryst.org\/main\/\">US National Committee for Crystallography<\/a> (2017-2021) and is currently the US National Chemistry Olympiad Coordinator for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.midhudsonacs.org\/\">Mid-Hudson Section of the American Chemical Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #c0c0c0\"> Chemistry &#8220;Bridge Building&#8221; opened January 2016!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Joe Tanski earned his A.B. in chemistry from Vassar College in 1995.
