With a beautiful campus, almost anything you could ever need within a mile radius and a lack of public transport, it\u2019s pretty easy to stay in the vicinity of Vassar College for all four years of your education here &#8211; but I didn\u2019t want to. When I found Field Experiences in the Hudson Valley, it was the perfect way to get out of the \u201cbubble\u201d before I eve<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/hvamenityeconomy\/files\/2013\/09\/IMG_1162.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-81 alignright\" alt=\"My dumb selfie\" src=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/hvamenityeconomy\/files\/2013\/09\/IMG_1162-225x300.jpg\" width=\"158\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/hvamenityeconomy\/files\/2013\/09\/IMG_1162-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/hvamenityeconomy\/files\/2013\/09\/IMG_1162-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/hvamenityeconomy\/files\/2013\/09\/IMG_1162-624x832.jpg 624w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/hvamenityeconomy\/files\/2013\/09\/IMG_1162.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 158px) 100vw, 158px\" \/><\/a>r got too comfortable in it.<\/p>\n<p>My name is Caitlin Munchick, and yes, I do have an accent &#8211; it\u2019s from South Africa. I\u2019m from Johannesburg, which has around four to ten million people, depending on how you define it. So, coming to Poughkeepsie, with a fraction (of a fraction) of the people living here, has definitely been a change for me. Then, we went to Armenia, which was a fraction of the size of Poughkeepsie, and surprisingly I kind of liked it.<\/p>\n<p>With one traffic light dir<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/hvamenityeconomy\/files\/2013\/09\/IMG_5154.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-80 alignleft\" alt=\"Drive in\" src=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/hvamenityeconomy\/files\/2013\/09\/IMG_5154-192x300.jpg\" width=\"192\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/hvamenityeconomy\/files\/2013\/09\/IMG_5154-192x300.jpg 192w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/hvamenityeconomy\/files\/2013\/09\/IMG_5154-656x1024.jpg 656w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/hvamenityeconomy\/files\/2013\/09\/IMG_5154-624x972.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/a>ecting \u201ctraffic\u201d, empty plots of land, scenic stops along the way and quaint, wooden houses completed by the American flag, raised up high &#8211; it was completely d<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/hvamenityeconomy\/files\/2013\/09\/IMG_5140.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-84 alignright\" alt=\"Open?\" src=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/hvamenityeconomy\/files\/2013\/09\/IMG_5140-300x300.jpg\" width=\"210\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/hvamenityeconomy\/files\/2013\/09\/IMG_5140-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/hvamenityeconomy\/files\/2013\/09\/IMG_5140-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/hvamenityeconomy\/files\/2013\/09\/IMG_5140-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/hvamenityeconomy\/files\/2013\/09\/IMG_5140-624x624.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a>ifferent to what I\u2019m used to. It was charming, especially after finding a drive-in theatre and a store named \u201cAntiques, A Loose Interpretation\u201d that was \u201cOpen (more or less)(less than more)\u201d. I could see why tired New Yorkers would retreat to towns like Armenia.<\/p>\n<p>Although the farmer\u2019s market was probably half the size we would have expected (at least), it compensated with a friendly vendors and great produce.
