On Sunday, a group of intrepid project members gathered to display beautiful, colorful Haitian art on the walls at Babycakes, where it will hang into early November. Go check it out!

The month will culminate in a semi-formal benefit dinner at Babycakes. Proceeds from the sale of artwork and the dinner will go towards the Education: Here and There initiative, which seeks to support education in Chermaitre, as well as raise awareness about Haiti at Vassar and in the surrounding Poughkeepsie community. Key to this effort is the student trip to Haiti, which will take place the for the second time in March 2010. I had the great honor of being part of that first trip two years ago, which was a transformative experience.

Visit Babycakes, see the art, learn about the project, and check back to learn more about the gala dinner on November 5!

Arlington Street Fair

Your first chance to become acquainted with the Vassar Haiti Project, if you’re not already, is quickly approaching! Come to the Arlington Street Fair this Saturday (September 26) to browse our selection of Haitian handicrafts, pick up a brochure, and talk to someone about the project. If you already know us, stop by and say hi!

We will be tabling from 12-6, promoting our upcoming exhibition at Babycakes, where we will be displaying Haitian art throughout October. The exhibition will culminate at the end of October in a gala dinner at Babycakes. Check back to see when and where you can buy tickets for the dinner.

See you Saturday!

Sak pase?

You respond to this Haitian greeting, meaning “what’s up?” with n’ap boule, meaning “we’re on fire!” And with several events coming up this fall, and initiatives like medical care and reforestation coming together, the Vassar Haiti Project is on fire! This, our new blog, is where you can keep up with it all. We’ll be posting notices about events, Haitian news flashes, information on initiatives, reflections from members, and much more. So bookmark us, and check back often!

In the meantime, watch our 6 minute documentary:
