She also explained that she started using a vector graphics\u00a0program for fine-tuning labels in her maps &#8212; something she picked up on-the-job.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The map above was included in a long range transportation plan for a regional planning organization in north-central Pennsylvania. \u00a0It illustrates the extent of national forest area across the six counties in the region &#8211; one the area&#8217;s major tourist attractions &#8211; as well as where\u00a0transportation development is possible for connecting residential areas and municipalities. \u00a0Note the use of different-sized labels for populated centers, larger cities, and counties &#8212; increasing in font size to indicate their relative importance \u00a0in the basemap. \u00a0Note also that only major roads are included. \u00a0These features provide the necessary context for viewers to comprehend the extent of the protected forest area, which is shaded so it\u00a0stands out from the lighter shades of the basemap. \u00a0The inset map illustrates the location of the six counties relative to the state and bordering states.<\/p>\n<p>The map below illustrates walking routes and times to bus stops in Charles Town, West Virginia. \u00a0The routes and distances are determined from social science research about\u00a0how far and long most people are willing to walk to a destination.<\/p>\n<p><a data-postid=\"fsg_post_432\" data-imgid=\"433\" href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/gis\/files\/2016\/12\/CharlesTown_BusStopWalkability.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-433 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/gis\/files\/2016\/12\/CharlesTown_BusStopWalkability-1024x663.png\" alt=\"charlestown_busstopwalkability\" width=\"640\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/gis\/files\/2016\/12\/CharlesTown_BusStopWalkability-1024x663.png 1024w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/gis\/files\/2016\/12\/CharlesTown_BusStopWalkability-300x194.png 300w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/gis\/files\/2016\/12\/CharlesTown_BusStopWalkability-768x497.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Prior to Michael Baker International, Emily was working for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phmc.pa.gov\/Preservation\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office<\/a>. \u00a0This was a great fit for Emily given her interest in historic architecture. \u00a0In this role, she explained,\u00a0&#8220;I used <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hexagongeospatial.com\/products\/power-portfolio\/geomedia\">GeoMedia <\/a>to map lat-long points and digitize features from aerial images\u2014I seem to remember Prof. Cunningham saying after the digitizing lab [in GEOG\/ESCI 224: GIS] that we wouldn\u2019t need to do very much of it, so it was funny to have a job that was almost entirely digitizing!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It is not unusual that\u00a0Emily was required to use software other than ArcMap. \u00a0While ArcMap is considered the industry-standard software for geospatial mapping and analysis, students who learn to use it\u00a0in GEOG\/ESCI 220 (Cartography) and\/or GEOG\/ESCI 221 (GIS) will find that these skills provide a foundation for quickly learning other geospatial mapping tools.<\/p>\n<p>To view the database of historic and archaeological sites and surveys Emily helped curate, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dot7.state.pa.us\/crgis\">Pennsylvania\u2019s Cultural Resources Geographic Information System<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Geospatial Mapping at Vassar blog is proud to showcase alumni work when available. \u00a0If you wish to share examples of your geospatial mapping and analysis\u00a0work, please email necurri@vassar.edu. \u00a0 In her first week at Michael Baker International, an Engineering &hellip;
