{"id":4147,"date":"2022-07-27T14:07:37","date_gmt":"2022-07-27T18:07:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/fordscholars\/?p=4147"},"modified":"2022-07-27T14:07:37","modified_gmt":"2022-07-27T18:07:37","slug":"china-reimagined-an-alternative-history-in-nine-parts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/fordscholars\/2022\/07\/27\/china-reimagined-an-alternative-history-in-nine-parts\/","title":{"rendered":"China Reimagined: An Alternative History in Nine Parts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This summer, I worked with Professor Michael Walsh on his project \u201cChina Reimagined: An Alternative History in Nine Parts.\u201d While refining his first-year writing seminar \u201cChina Reimagined,\u201d the project will also be expanded into a book that provides alternative perspectives of Chinese history than the more traditional chronologies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The project is inspired by \u6d1b\u66f8<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LuoShu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">), an ancient mystical chart that appeared from the Luo River in central China.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/fordscholars\/files\/2022\/07\/Picture1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4156 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/fordscholars\/files\/2022\/07\/Picture1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the chart of \u6d1b\u66f8 (LuoShu)\u00a0after the Song dynasty\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our primary task was to explore the concept of \u201cChina\u201d through 9 themes, beginning with \u201cterritory\u201d \u570b, which concentrates broadly on Chinese cosmology, and ending with \u201cpeople\u201d\u6c11.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The challenge of the project is that it\u2019s impossible to give a comprehensive conclusion of what China is and who \u2018counts\u2019 as Chinese. We worked together to figure out the most appropriate nine themes for the book project and the appropriate Chinese and English titles for each topic. I also researched the etymology of relevant Chinese terms. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Besides tracing the history of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LuoShu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, I mainly worked to find primary and secondary resources in Chinese both in the library and online. Professor Walsh gave me much freedom to explore these topics and I found myself dwelling on some topics like \u201cterritory\u201d and \u201ccity\u201d while spending less time on others. Additionally, translating the texts was a surprisingly helpful way of learning. I found myself knowing a lot more than merely \u201creading through the words.\u201d It almost feels like the 8 weeks of research just started yesterday.
