{"id":218,"date":"2013-07-17T21:57:09","date_gmt":"2013-07-18T01:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/fordscholars\/?p=218"},"modified":"2013-07-23T11:37:39","modified_gmt":"2013-07-23T15:37:39","slug":"nelson-mandela-and-the-history-of-20th-century-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/fordscholars\/2013\/07\/17\/nelson-mandela-and-the-history-of-20th-century-south-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"Nelson Mandela and the History of 20th Century South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For our Ford Scholars project, Professor Ismail Rashid and I designed a course on 20<sup>th<\/sup> century South Africa. \u00a0This course will be taught in fall 2013 for 100-level students using Nelson Mandela and his 1994 autobiography <i>Long Walk to Freedom\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/fordscholars\/files\/2013\/07\/Long_Walk_to_Freedom.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-451 alignright\" alt=\"Long_Walk_to_Freedom\" src=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/fordscholars\/files\/2013\/07\/Long_Walk_to_Freedom.jpg\" width=\"191\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/i>as the primary point of entrance into South Africa in the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century. In many ways, Mandela, born in 1918, is the perfect guide for the study of 20<sup>th<\/sup> century South Africa.\u00a0 As one of the most famous South Africans and one of the most influential figures of the time, Mandela\u2019s unique life story touches on nearly all of the major events and themes of 20<sup>th<\/sup> century South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>I began this project with a deep reading of Mandela\u2019s autobiography, as well as surveying comparable courses from around the world as a way to identify the weekly topics that will form the backbone of the course. \u00a0Readings will include Mark Mathabane\u2019s novel,\u00a0<i>Kaffir Boy,\u00a0<\/i>and Afrikaans poet Antjie Krog&#8217;s book on South Africa&#8217;s Truth and Reconciliation Commission,\u00a0<i>Country of My Skull<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>I concluded the project by collecting film, photographs, and other media for student use, both in and outside of class. \u00a0Films to be included are the PBS documentary,\u00a0<i>Have You Heard from Johannesburg?;\u00a0<\/i>the multimedia project,\u00a0<i>Afrikaner Blood;<\/i>\u00a0and Deborah Hoffman and Frances Reid\u2019s <i>A Long Nights Journey into Day<\/i>.\u00a0 With most of the groundwork completed, I am looking forward to seeing how the course takes shape in the fall. ~Paul Clarke &#8217;14<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/fordscholars\/files\/2013\/07\/IMG_0479.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Robben Island\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/fordscholars\/files\/2013\/07\/IMG_0479-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Limestone quarry where the high security political prisoners like Mandela were forced to do hard labor.
