In the realm of media art, dual screens offer the opportunity for an entirely new cinematic language: for example, narrative manipulation (showing two possible scenarios), innovative constructions of space (a wide view and an extreme close-up simultaneously), and multiple points of view (omniscient and internal to the characters). <\/p>\n
My goal was to experiment with Mad Mapper software in the creation of dual screen videos and further explore the possibilities of doing this on location using the Mini Mads players. I am interested in including multiple channel media in a course on experimental filmmaking practices. In addition, I wanted to use the Mini Mads to present my own dual screen video in gallery settings where it wouldn’t be practical to install a computer.<\/p>\n
After a long initial delay due to post-pandemic supply chain issues, I received the gear. I used Mad Mapper to present my film “Supersymmetry” at the Loeb Center. The software works well and is easy to use. I have also experimented with the Mini Mads in preparation for a gallery exhibition and they show great promise. I am excited to use them for the portability they offer — allowing synched video projections in any environment, such as outdoors, etc. <\/p>\n
The course on experimental filmmaking practices is still in the works. I look forward to teaching a module on dual screens using this technology, which seems like an elegant solution.<\/p>\n
