{"id":337,"date":"2020-04-02T09:15:54","date_gmt":"2020-04-02T13:15:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/distanceteaching\/?p=337"},"modified":"2020-04-02T09:15:54","modified_gmt":"2020-04-02T13:15:54","slug":"how-to-prevent-zoom-bombing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/distanceteaching\/2020\/04\/02\/how-to-prevent-zoom-bombing\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Prevent Zoom-Bombing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There have been reports of a practice called &#8220;Zoom Bombing&#8221;, where an uninvited &#8211; and often devious &#8211; guest shows up and posts inappropriate content in the chat window or on video.<\/p>\n<p>If you are concerned about the security and privacy of your meetings, follow the guidance below.\u00a0 You can configure many of the settings as defaults for all of your meetings.\u00a0 Log in at <a href=\"https:\/\/vassar.zoom.us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vassar.zoom.us<\/a>\u00a0and select Settings to make these your defaults.<\/p>\n<p>Zoom also provides guidance at the following blog posts:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.zoom.us\/wordpress\/2020\/03\/20\/keep-the-party-crashers-from-crashing-your-zoom-event\/\">https:\/\/blog.zoom.us\/wordpress\/2020\/03\/20\/keep-the-party-crashers-from-crashing-your-zoom-event\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.zoom.us\/wordpress\/2020\/03\/27\/best-practices-for-securing-your-virtual-classroom\/\">https:\/\/blog.zoom.us\/wordpress\/2020\/03\/27\/best-practices-for-securing-your-virtual-classroom\/<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Scheduling Meetings<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Generate meeting ID automatically<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Unique meeting IDs expire 30 days after the meeting has occurred, and provide protection if a meeting ID was shared accidentally to a public audience.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Require meeting password<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Don&#8217;t share your meeting password.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Enable waiting room<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Review attendees before admitting them to the meeting. For large classes or conferences, consider assigning this job to a co-host.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Only authenticated users can join<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 This option ensures that only Zoom users can attend your meeting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disable Join before host<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 This option prevents the participants from joining prior the host.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disable Allow removed participants to rejoin\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 If<span class=\"mce-nbsp-wrap\">\u00a0<\/span>you<span class=\"mce-nbsp-wrap\">\u00a0<\/span>need<span class=\"mce-nbsp-wrap\">\u00a0<\/span>to<span class=\"mce-nbsp-wrap\">\u00a0<\/span>remove<span class=\"mce-nbsp-wrap\">\u00a0<\/span>a<span class=\"mce-nbsp-wrap\">\u00a0<\/span>participant<span class=\"mce-nbsp-wrap\">\u00a0<\/span>during<span class=\"mce-nbsp-wrap\">\u00a0<\/span>the<span class=\"mce-nbsp-wrap\">\u00a0<\/span>session,<span class=\"mce-nbsp-wrap\">\u00a0<\/span>this<span class=\"mce-nbsp-wrap\">\u00a0<\/span>prevents<span class=\"mce-nbsp-wrap\">\u00a0<\/span>them<span class=\"mce-nbsp-wrap\">\u00a0<\/span>from<span class=\"mce-nbsp-wrap\">\u00a0<\/span>rejoining.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>During Meetings<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mute all<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 As the host, you can mute all in the Participant pane. You can also stop participants from unmuting themselves, and ask them to use chat for questions. For large classes or conferences, consider assigning this job to a co-host.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lock meeting<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Prevents any additional participants from joining.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Screen sharing is host only<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 By default, only hosts can share their screens. Hosts can grant individuals the ability to share in the participant pane.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Allow participants to chat with host only<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Available from the chat pane.\u00a0Restrict chat to host only, no one, or everyone.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Disable annotation<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; When sharing content,\u00a0use the More option to disable attendee annotation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remove unwanted participants<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Beside the participants name (in the Participant pane) select\u00a0<strong>More,\u00a0<\/strong>and<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>then select\u00a0<strong>Remove.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There have been reports of a practice called &#8220;Zoom Bombing&#8221;, where an uninvited &#8211; and often devious &#8211; guest shows up and posts inappropriate content in the chat window or on video.
