{"id":347,"date":"2012-02-06T00:16:33","date_gmt":"2012-02-06T04:16:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.vassar.edu\/digital-storytelling-2012\/?p=347"},"modified":"2017-10-20T10:05:37","modified_gmt":"2017-10-20T14:05:37","slug":"graphic-novels-in-the-classroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/digital-storytelling-2012\/graphic-novels-in-the-classroom\/","title":{"rendered":"Graphic Novels in the Classroom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I love the idea of using graphic novels in the classroom. \u00a0It seems to me that students, due to increasing technologies and the widespread availability of multimedia, have become incredibly visual learners. \u00a0Even looking at myself and my parents it&#8217;s easy to see that even I am a much more visual learner than they were. \u00a0I agree with Lesesne when she explains that graphic novels provide readers with &#8220;complex characters and multilayered plots&#8221; (Beers, 63), in addition to important literary elements such as mood and tone. \u00a0What&#8217;s really important about graphic novels is that they are able to use sometimes complicated elements such as mood in a way that a younger reader can easily understand (i.e. when the shades in the frame are darker perhaps the mood of the scene has changed). \u00a0Complex and complicated concepts can be unpacked through graphic novels and visual media in ways that allow students to easily grasp these notions of style. \u00a0On top of that, for generations of students raised on video games and television, a graphic novel is simply more engaging. \u00a0I think back to reading <em>Maus<\/em>\u00a0in 7th grade Hebrew school and being captivated by Art Spiegelman&#8217;s portrayal of the Holocaust.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-_FxjzIFwULk\/TVfATtVMW4I\/AAAAAAAAA08\/6mFvYx8DU3A\/s1600\/maus.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"265\" height=\"265\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To this day I have read few other novels focusing on the Holocaust that are more memorable or more poignant than <em>Maus.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0I don&#8217;t suggest that teachers should completely adopt graphic novels or other visual media as their main source of literature for students, but instead that graphic novels provide a spectacular tool for teaching complex literary concepts as well as engaging students who would be bored and uninvolved if reading a traditional text.<\/p>\n<p>Joe<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; I love the idea of using graphic novels in the classroom. \u00a0It seems to me that students, due to increasing technologies and the widespread availability of multimedia, have become incredibly visual learners. \u00a0Even looking at myself and my parents &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/digital-storytelling-2012\/graphic-novels-in-the-classroom\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":559,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[26720,26734],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-347","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-joe","category-reading-response"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/digital-storytelling-2012\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/347","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/digital-storytelling-2012\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/digital-storytelling-2012\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/digital-storytelling-2012\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/559"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/digital-storytelling-2012\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=347"}],"version-history":[{"count":8,"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/digital-storytelling-2012\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/347\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":396,"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/digital-storytelling-2012\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/347\/revisions\/396"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/digital-storytelling-2012\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=347"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/digital-storytelling-2012\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=347"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/digital-storytelling-2012\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=347"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
