Vassar Chair of Natural History at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vassar.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Vassar College<\/a>.\u00a0 He is the Director, along with Ken Livingston, of the <a title=\"Interdisciplinary Robotics Research Laboratory\" href=\"http:\/\/irrl.vassar.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Interdisciplinary Robotics Research Laboratory.<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Along with his students and collaborators, John uses robots to study animals, and evolving robots to study evolution.\u00a0 This integrative research combines biomechanics, biomathematics, cognitive science, computer science, engineering, evolutionary biology, and robotics.<\/p>\n<p>With colleague Ken Livingston leading the way, John is part of a collaboration to use evolving robots to study the <a title=\"Evolution of Evolvability\" href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/evodevorobotics\/\" target=\"_blank\">evolution of evolvability<\/a>.\u00a0 <a title=\"Evolution of Evolvability\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=1344227\">This research<\/a> is funded by the <a title=\"National Science Foundation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/discoveries\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Science Foundation<\/a> through their cross-disciplinary INSPIRE program.\u00a0 Other collaborators on this project include Jodi Schwarz, Marc Smith, Nick Livingston, Anton Bernatskiy, and Josh Bongard of the University of Vermont.<\/p>\n<p>John is an associate editor of two great new journals:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a title=\"Soft Robotics\" href=\"http:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/overview\/soft-robotics\/616\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Soft Robotics<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <em><a title=\"Frontiers in Robotics and AI\" href=\"http:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/Robotics_and_AI\" target=\"_blank\">Frontiers in Robotics and AI<\/a> <\/em>(Evolutionary Robotics specialty section).<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s also on the editorial board of a third excellent journal, <em><a title=\"Bioinspiration &amp; Biomimetics\" href=\"http:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/1748-3190\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bioinspiration and Biomimetics<\/a>, <\/em>and is happy to advise you on publishing your own research in any of these three venues (email:\u00a0 jolong &lt;at&gt; vassar.edu).<\/p>\n<p>You can find John&#8217;s <a title=\"scientific publications\" href=\"http:\/\/faculty.vassar.edu\/jolong\/publications.html\" target=\"_blank\">scientific publications<\/a> at his professorial web page and at his <a title=\"John Long at Google Scholar\" href=\"http:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?hl=en&amp;user=TwJOACQAAAAJ\" target=\"_blank\">Google Scholar citation page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>John is a nerd and proud of it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What&#8217;s up next?\u00a0 &#8220;Introduction to Robotics,&#8221; an educational show for <a title=\"The Great Courses\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thegreatcourses.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Great Courses<\/a>.\u00a0 We film the 24 episodes in January, 2015, to be released on DVD and via the web in mid-2015.<\/p>\n<p>For popular science writing, John is represented by <a title=\"Laura Wood\" href=\"http:\/\/fineprintlit.com\/about-the-agents\/laura-wood\/\" target=\"_blank\">Laura Wood<\/a> of FinePrint Literary Management.<\/p>\n<p>John is available for public presentations.<\/p>\n<p>He is also available for academic presentations, including visits to classes that adopt the book.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>John Long is Professor of Biology and Cognitive Science on the John G.
