Poems that are as relevant to the creative growth of an audience as they are crucial to the being and becoming of the poet.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Of course how can we not begin with Vassar&#8217;s own Elizabeth Bishop &#8217;34, and one of her most famous poems, &#8220;At the Fishhouses&#8221; (1947). And to complement her beautiful lyric, consider listening to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/podcast\/robert-pinsky-reads-at-the-fishhouses-by-elizabeth-bishop?intcid=mod-yml\">New Yorker&#8217;s recent podcast<\/a>, where renowned Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky speaks to Bishop&#8217;s poem.<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"poem-top\" class=\"tab-content active\">\n<h1>At the Fishhouses <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span class=\"author\">By Elizabeth Bishop<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">Although it is a cold evening,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">down by one of the fishhouses<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">an old man sits netting,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">his net, in the gloaming almost invisible,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">a dark purple-brown,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">and his shuttle worn and polished.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The air smells so strong of codfish<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">it makes one\u2019s nose run and one\u2019s eyes water.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The five fishhouses have steeply peaked roofs<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">and narrow, cleated gangplanks slant up<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">to storerooms in the gables<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">for the wheelbarrows to be pushed up and down on.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">All is silver: the heavy surface of the sea,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">swelling slowly as if considering spilling over,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">is opaque, but the silver of the benches,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">the lobster pots, and masts, scattered<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">among the wild jagged rocks,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">is of an apparent translucence<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">like the small old buildings with an emerald moss<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333333;\">growing on their shoreward walls.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>The big fish tubs are completely lined<\/div>\n<div>with layers of beautiful herring scales<\/div>\n<div>and the wheelbarrows are similarly plastered<\/div>\n<div>with creamy iridescent coats of mail,<\/div>\n<div>with small iridescent flies crawling on them.<\/div>\n<div>Up on the little slope behind the houses,<\/div>\n<div>set in the sparse bright sprinkle of grass,<\/div>\n<div>is an ancient wooden capstan,<\/div>\n<div>cracked, with two long bleached handles<\/div>\n<div>and some melancholy stains, like dried blood,<\/div>\n<div>where the ironwork has rusted.<\/div>\n<div>The old man accepts a Lucky Strike.<\/div>\n<div>He was a friend of my grandfather.<\/div>\n<div>We talk of the decline in the population<\/div>\n<div>and of codfish and herring<\/div>\n<div>while he waits for a herring boat to come in.<\/div>\n<div>There are sequins on his vest and on his thumb.<\/div>\n<div>He has scraped the scales, the principal beauty,<\/div>\n<div>from unnumbered fish with that black old knife,<\/div>\n<div>the blade of which is almost worn away.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"poem\" class=\"tab-content active\">\n<div class=\"poem\">\n<div><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For the full poem please visit the link <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poem\/182896\">here<\/a> from the Poetry Foundation.<\/span><\/em><\/div>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8220;At the Fishhouses&#8221;
