{"id":224,"date":"2016-09-09T10:14:45","date_gmt":"2016-09-09T14:14:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/creativearts-calendar\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;p=224"},"modified":"2016-11-28T12:40:57","modified_gmt":"2016-11-28T17:40:57","slug":"jane-hirschfeld-lecture","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/creativearts-calendar\/event\/jane-hirschfeld-lecture\/","title":{"rendered":"Jane Hirshfield Lecture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jane Hirshfield, an award-winning poet, essayist, and translator, will deliver a public lecture at 6pm in Taylor 203.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instructing us on what it means to awaken to the full capacity of attention, Jane Hirschfield\u2019s work ranges from the metaphysical and passionate to the political, ecological, and scientific, to the subtle and miraculous unfoldings of daily life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Hirshfield has published eight collections of poetry, including <i>The Beauty<\/i>, <i>After<\/i>, and <i>Given Sugar, Given Salt<\/i>.\u00a0 Her collections of essays on &#8220;the mind of poetry\u201d\u2014 <i>Ten Windows: How Great Poems Transform the World <\/i>and <i>Nine Gates: Entering the Mind of Poetry&#8211;<\/i>are classics in their field.\u00a0 Her <span class=\"s1\">work has been called &#8220;passionate and radiant&#8221; by the <i>New York Times Book Review<\/i>, and described by the <i>San Francisco Chronicle<\/i> as evidencing &#8220;the grasp of a master&#8221; and &#8220;filled with somber, judiciously lit treasures.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Among Hirshfield\u2019s many honors are The Poetry Center Book Award; fellowships from the Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundations, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Academy of American Poets; Columbia University&#8217;s Translation Center Award; and the Commonwealth Club of California&#8217;s California Book Award. Her work has appeared in <i>The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The Nation, Harper&#8217;s The American Poetry Review, Poetry, The Paris Review, McSweeney&#8217;s, Orion<\/i>, eight volumes of <i>The Best American Poetry<\/i> (including the 25th anniversary Best of the Best American Poetry volume), and many other publications. In 2004, Hirshfield was awarded the 70th Academy Fellowship for Distinguished Poetic Achievement by the Academy of American Poets, an honor formerly held by such poets as Robert Frost, Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, and Elizabeth Bishop.
