SUMMARY:Screening of Moses Tulasi's "Walking the Walk"
DESCRIPTION:Born and brought up in a small town\, Warangal in the state of Telangana\, India and inspired by the Hindi parallel cinema of the 80’s\, Moses Tulasi was always keen on films that had social relevance. While pursuing a career in technology in the US\, Moses had also served on the board of Trikone-Chicago for six years\, a support group for LGBT individuals of South Asian heritage and allies. \nIn the winter of 2014\, Moses took a sabbatical from work and traveled to India\, tracing his roots back\, in search of a socially relevant subject for his first film. Moses was inspired to give a platform to socio-politically charged queer rights movement in the city of Hyderabad\, set against the backdrop of recently successful social movement which led to formation of a brand new state in India\, Telangana. This is how the documentary film Walking the Walk was made. \nWalking the Walk follows the participants of Hyderabad’s Swabhimana (self-respect) Queer Pride March in February 2015. The walk draws inspiration from the most recently successful social movement which led to formation of a brand new state in India\, Telangana. This film demonstrates how a collective of activists do more than talk the talk; they set into motion a political movement that celebrates small successes\, demands resources for working-class transgender people\, stands up to police violence\, and allows the community to grieve for lost loved ones. \nA screening of Walking the Walk will take place in the CC MPR on February 11\, followed by a Skype session with Moses and other contributors to the film.

SUMMARY:Flying Words Project
DESCRIPTION:Internationally renowned Deaf performing artist and poet Peter Cook will deliver a lecture and perform with his American Sign Language (ASL) poetry troupe\, the Flying Words Project\, in two events at Vassar College. \nCook utilizes pantomime\, storytelling\, acting\, and movement in his performances. LA Weekly has written that Cook has “…the most elastic facial maneuvers this side of Robin Williams.” \nCook’s lecture\, “Painting in the Air: Creativity and American Sign Language\,” will take place on Thursday\, November 5\, at 6:00pm in Taylor Hall\, room 203. \nOn Saturday\, November 7\, at 7:00pm\, Cook and his Flying Words Project hearing collaborator and coauthor Kenny Lerner will perform in the Sanders Classroom Building\, Spitzer Auditorium (room 212). \nBoth events are free and open to the public. \nThe Flying Words Project has been performing for nearly thirty years. Cook and Lerner first write their poems in ASL and then decide how to voice them. “We figure out how to express just enough words and sounds so that hearing members in the audience can see the images for themselves\,” Cook explains. \nCook has traveled extensively around the country and abroad with the Flying Words Project to promote ASL literature. An associate professor of ASL-English interpretation at Chicago’s Columbia College\, Cook has been featured in festivals such as the Jonesboro National Storytelling Festival \, Oklahoma City Winter Tales\, Illinois Storytelling Festival\, Indiana Hoosier Storytelling Festival\, Eugene Oregon Multi-Cultural Festival\, The Deaf Way II and the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center in Washington\, D.C. He was also featured in the film United States of Poetry. \nCritical study about the Flying Words Project has appeared in the journals\, Literature and Medicine and The Tactile Mind. \nCook and the Flying Words Project’s appearances are sponsored by the Creative Arts Across Disciplines Initiative at Vassar\, which is generously funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. \nFor more information about this event visit: http://deafpetercook.com/ \nIndividuals with disabilities requiring accommodations or information on accessibility contact the Campus Activities Office: 845-437-5370
