Most crucially, the pivots and collaborations are grounded in a mutual aid and critical consciousness approach–that acknowledges both trauma and the strengths of collectivist cultures and communities. Innovative programming includes: Leyendo Juntos–a virtual reading pod for K-3rd grade students at a Latino immigrant serving school, and the Digital Literacy and Bilingual Support program with our cohort of heritage Spanish speaking Dominican students that now collaborates with multiple partners. We also created and collaborated on modules and presentations for students and the broader campus community such as the modules based on Cultural Humility principles (Tarvelon & Murray-Garcia, 1998). We will share our effective applications of Appreciative Inquiry, Cultural Humility principles and framing, and asset-based critical community engagement.

Speakers

Jocelyn Gomez – Dominican University of California
Julia van der Ryn – Dominican University of CA
Emily Wu – Dominican University of CA

——————————

Name

From Pandemic to Paradigm Shift: How We are Adapting to Meet the Evolving Needs of our Campuses and Communities

Date

Thursday, November 18, 2021

Time

3:00 PM – 4:00 PM (EST)

Description

When a crisis hits, be it a hurricane or an international pandemic, students want to immediately respond. However, good intentions do not always present themselves as meaningful actions. A large group of untrained volunteers descending upon a community in crisis often creates more harm than good. It is our role to step into these spaces and bridge the gap between community partners and student volunteers. We must help guide our students in finding opportunities that allow them to safely engage, while providing meaningful support to our partners. Come learn from colleagues at Brandeis University’s Department of Community Service and the ways we pivoted our operations to continue providing necessary support to our community and campus amidst a public health crisis. In this session, we will share examples of both new and adapted programs and risk management policies, challenges and successes of remote engagement, takeaways from the shift from direct service to advocacy, and lessons we learned that will change our work long after the pandemic. We will also share the ways our definitions of service and community evolved, leading us to adapt our current models and university resources to provide relevant and sustainable community support. We hope you will walk away from this session with a new perspective on community and action items to help your team not only be proactive in preparing for the next crisis, but perhaps make lasting changes to your current model of engagement.

Speakers

<div class="session more-info-data field-speakersLinks Market forces have created pressures within higher education that have created the “entrepreneurial university” driven by neoliberalism, which imbues the business creed across the university. How did this happen? What does it mean for the CEM? How does it shape the quest for authentically building just, neighborly communities centered on equity and voices of those most marginalized? What can be done about it? This multidimensional session involves a historical background from an activist urban historian, followed by a panel of practitioner/scholars sharing their perspectives about how to do authentic engagement work within this context. Practical suggestions for how to incorporate this work into Civic Action Planning will also be explored. There will also be an opportunity for people to think collaboratively about what agency they have in countering these market forces and formulate concrete actions for when they return to their campuses. The point is to motivate civic engagement professionals to know their history, understand the forces shaping higher education, and how they can respond.

Speakers: Gavin Luter, Henry Taylor, Kent Koth, Ken Reardon

Avoiding Microaggressions within Service Learning and Community Engaged Learning

Presented by: Campus Compact, Boston, MA

Date: Thursday, February 11, 2021

Time: 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM (EST)

Description

Community-engaged experiences provide the opportunity for faculty to collaborate authentically and reciprocally with partners who often represent historically disenfranchised communities where policy, resource allocation, and deficit-based communication strategies had an impact on growth, perception and development. This recipe results in implicit bias that exists in everyone, and as a result, microaggressions occur. That is exactly what happened on our campus and in our community. As Community Engagement professionals, during our support of faculty service-learning instruction and implementation, we started to see and hear an increasing number of microaggressions from faculty members, community partners and students. In response to these microaggressions occurring within service-learning experiences on our campus we developed workshops for students, faculty, staff and community partners to dedicate time and space to explore their journey with these concepts and to arm them with tools and strategies to address bias in community engagement work and to respond to microaggressions when they occur. This interactive session provides attendees hands-on learning about implicit bias, microaggressions, microresistence strategies and lessons learned from one campus’s journey to involve all community engagement stakeholders in these conversations. Participants will explore how they can engage their campus and community in opportunities to learn about microaggressions and microresistance and to develop strategies for their own community-engaged work to address these issues.

Speakers: Kirsten Case Fuller, Julie Dierberger, Latrina Parker

Fall 2020 Community Building Institute

October 20 – 10:45am-12:00pm | Community Assessment

October 21 – 11:00am-12:00pm | Creating Community Awareness and Stakeholder Involvement

October 22 – 11:00am-12:00pm | Building Community Advisory Groups

October 27 – 11:00am-12:00pm | Social Media and Marketing for Nonprofits

October 28 – 11:00am-12:00pm | Strategic Planning and Implementation

October 29 – 11:00am-12:00pm | Evaluation for Everyday Use

Presented by the Community Building Institute, Arlington, VA

Held twice per year, the Community Building Institute (CBI) series guides participants towards an intentional approach to community-focused work. They examine the underlying factors that sparked the city’s strong reaction to this tragedy and the importance of the Black Lives Matter movement. Colleagues in other parts of the globe will then share their thoughts about why what happened in Minneapolis resonated across the globe. What was it about this local incident that resulted in a worldwide call to action? How do we sustain the call to action to realize real change? This session concludes with a discussion by IARSLCE board members and attendees on the role that service-learning and community engagement research and practice play in advancing and realizing systemic justice.

Community-engaged learning is an iterative process based on constant reflection.
