Allan Clifton
Associate Professor of Psychological Science

Allan Clifton has been at Vassar since 2006. His interest in psychology was shaped at Haverford College, with Doug Davis as his primary research mentor. After graduating from Haverford, he received a 2-year Intramural Research Training Award to work at NIMH with Anil Malhotra on a study of the pharmacogenetics of schizophrenia.

His PhD in clinical psychology is from the University of Virginia, where he worked on the Peer Nomination Project of Personality, run by Eric Turkheimer and Tom Oltmanns. That research centered on the differences between self-report and informant-report in the assessment of personality and personality disorders. He wrote his dissertation on “Social Network Analysis of Self and Peer Perceptions of Pathological Personality.”

He completed his clinical internship at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. with clinical emphases on personality disorders, and anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders. He also completed a two-year research postdoctoral fellowship at WPIC, where he worked with Paul Pilkonis in developing new models of interpersonal functioning in borderline personality disorder.

His work at Vassar has focused on using social network analysis to understand differences in personality, pathology, and behavior.
