{"id":79,"date":"2016-08-18T02:11:37","date_gmt":"2016-08-18T06:11:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/benmorin\/?p=79"},"modified":"2016-08-18T23:56:39","modified_gmt":"2016-08-19T03:56:39","slug":"verhulst","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/benmorin\/2016\/08\/18\/verhulst\/","title":{"rendered":"Verhulst&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have to admit, there was a time when I was in love with an equation.<\/p>\n<p>The class of nonlinear differential equations are fairly notoriously pains in the butt, but for me, they represented something other than that pain. They reflected the artful beauty found in integral calculus. Sergey Lvin, was a soft spoken mathematics professor at the University of Maine who took pride in his teaching. I recall asking him once why my differential equations class was so difficult while derivatives were really automatic and straightforward. He smiled and said to me that &#8220;Differentiation was a science and integration was an art.&#8221; What he meant was that one could follow the rules by rote and take the derivative of any function imaginable, and yet to find the integral of a function was often a journey through considering various solution tactics. And to make matters worse, differential equations are implicit relationships between derivatives and the state quantities. Rather than <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/benmorin\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-2bfb1ea8538857a99dadba931e9e1792_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#92;&#102;&#114;&#97;&#99;&#123;&#100;&#120;&#125;&#123;&#100;&#116;&#125;&#61;&#102;&#40;&#116;&#41;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"22\" width=\"70\" style=\"vertical-align: -6px;\"\/> we have that <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/benmorin\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-a2bb9633451a65e4069490501838f9a5_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#92;&#102;&#114;&#97;&#99;&#123;&#100;&#120;&#125;&#123;&#100;&#116;&#125;&#61;&#102;&#40;&#120;&#40;&#116;&#41;&#44;&#116;&#41;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"22\" width=\"108\" style=\"vertical-align: -6px;\"\/> and that makes all the difference in the world.<\/p>\n<p>However, utilizing the tools you&#8217;ve learned with the experience you&#8217;ve gained to approach problems, often from oblique lines of inquiry, is the joy of mathematics. I enjoyed learning methods, building my tools belt to handle any situation, and this is in part why I remember liking the Verhulst equation so much:<\/p>\n<p class=\"ql-center-displayed-equation\" style=\"line-height: 43px;\"><span class=\"ql-right-eqno\"> (1) <\/span><span class=\"ql-left-eqno\"> &nbsp; <\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/benmorin\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-d4efc63f08df6cba100b31b43e25db5b_l3.png\" height=\"43\" width=\"152\" class=\"ql-img-displayed-equation quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#92;&#98;&#101;&#103;&#105;&#110;&#123;&#97;&#108;&#105;&#103;&#110;&#42;&#125;&#92;&#102;&#114;&#97;&#99;&#123;&#100;&#78;&#125;&#123;&#100;&#116;&#125;&#38;&#61;&#114;&#78;&#92;&#108;&#101;&#102;&#116;&#40;&#49;&#45;&#92;&#102;&#114;&#97;&#99;&#123;&#78;&#125;&#123;&#75;&#125;&#92;&#114;&#105;&#103;&#104;&#116;&#41;&#92;&#101;&#110;&#100;&#123;&#97;&#108;&#105;&#103;&#110;&#42;&#125;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Pierre Verhulst was a mathematician of some note from the early 19th century. In a collection of papers starting in 1938 (of which I must get my hands on) he proposes that for a population of <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/benmorin\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-52aeb8f79007a459714cae10edbf6a3c_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#78;&#40;&#116;&#41;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"18\" width=\"35\" style=\"vertical-align: -4px;\"\/> individuals at time <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/benmorin\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-6b97bb0f65c75b6cc0fba1868749478d_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#116;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"12\" width=\"6\" style=\"vertical-align: 0px;\"\/> that there is some intrinsic growth rate to the population, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/benmorin\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-df163da6c15d481bf43b92e0e9ab6c1c_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#114;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"8\" width=\"8\" style=\"vertical-align: 0px;\"\/>, and a natural carrying capacity for it within its environment, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/benmorin\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-b760ebc707e08dd6e1888ea8da4c2454_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#75;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"12\" width=\"16\" style=\"vertical-align: 0px;\"\/>. It took him 7 years to call the solution to this differential equation the logistic equation and some how the wires crossed and that is what I see the differential equation called. This was amazing to me. Here was a fairly complex (for me at the time) differential equation where the parameters just made sense. To boot it was an adventure to solve. I&#8217;ll have you know that out of those 21 steps that 15 of them are strictly algebra (just a hair under 75%).<\/p>\n<p>The point, to bring us back to it, is that I was shown an equation where everything has real life meaning and the solution was a fun journey through using multiple tools (separation of variables &#8211; a change of differential notation, partial fraction decomposition, linearity of integral operator, integration by substitution, knowledge of transcendentals like <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/benmorin\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-70b0afcf27c02778cc6e03528fef4380_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#92;&#108;&#110;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"13\" width=\"15\" style=\"vertical-align: 0px;\"\/> and exponentiation, and fancy <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/benmorin\/wp-content\/ql-cache\/quicklatex.com-4e1cc98a4aabd7836fd3453c324907cb_l3.png\" class=\"ql-img-inline-formula quicklatex-auto-format\" alt=\"&#92;&#112;&#109;\" title=\"Rendered by QuickLaTeX.com\" height=\"12\" width=\"13\" style=\"vertical-align: 0px;\"\/> obfuscation)and a lot of my knowledge. I could sketch the solution and understand what it meant. I could consider the limiting behavior explicitly or qualitatively.\u00a0 I loved this thing. I loved it. Loved.\u00a0 Past tense.
