Though there are some free or cheap programs that can do these things, such programs are generally not easy to use. Now they\u2014 if they are Mac users, anyway\u2014 have a great alternative: Preview.<\/p>\n<p>Preview is a program that has been included with the Macintosh operating system for many years. By default, it\u2019s the program that launches if you double-click on a\u00a0 JPEG file or PDF file. And initially, that\u2019s about all it could do: show you what a file looks like.\u00a0 But over the years, it\u2019s accrued more functions and the current version\u2014 the one that comes bundled with Mac OS 10.6\u2014 is an elegant tool for basic image editing.<\/p>\n<p><a data-postid=\"fsg_post_396\" data-imgid=\"401\" href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2011\/02\/Preview-color-adjust.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-401\" title=\"Preview color-adjust\" src=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2011\/02\/Preview-color-adjust.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"526\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2011\/02\/Preview-color-adjust.jpg 624w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2011\/02\/Preview-color-adjust-300x207.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2011\/02\/Preview-color-adjust-150x103.jpg 150w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2011\/02\/Preview-color-adjust-400x276.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 526px) 100vw, 526px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With the Color Adjustment tool, you can change the brightness, contrast, saturation, temperature, tint, sharpness, and even a sepia effect. The Size Adjustment tool is essentially the same as PhotoShop\u2019s\u2014 you can adjust the height, width or resolution, choosing whether to resample the image when doing so or not. You can use your mouse to select a portion of the image and crop the rest out. You can rotate or flip the image. You can copy and paste pieces of the image. When you\u2019re done, you can save the edited version in any of several file formats.<\/p>\n<p>And while this is not new, it\u2019s a nifty capability: you can drag a collection of image files onto the Preview icon to present a slide show.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PDF Annotation<\/strong><br \/>\n<a data-postid=\"fsg_post_396\" data-imgid=\"404\" href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2011\/02\/preview-annotation-toolbar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-404\" title=\"preview annotation toolbar\" src=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2011\/02\/preview-annotation-toolbar.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"779\" height=\"42\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2011\/02\/preview-annotation-toolbar.jpg 779w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2011\/02\/preview-annotation-toolbar-300x16.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2011\/02\/preview-annotation-toolbar-150x8.jpg 150w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2011\/02\/preview-annotation-toolbar-400x21.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 779px) 100vw, 779px\" \/><\/a>Preview can also display PDF files\u2014 in fact, it\u2019s the default PDF viewer on a Macintosh. What\u2019s new is that you can now use Preview to annotate a PDF in various ways.<a data-postid=\"fsg_post_396\" data-imgid=\"407\" href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2011\/02\/Preview-circles-and-arrows.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-407\" title=\"Preview circles and arrows\" src=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2011\/02\/Preview-circles-and-arrows.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"390\" height=\"111\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2011\/02\/Preview-circles-and-arrows.jpg 390w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2011\/02\/Preview-circles-and-arrows-300x85.jpg 300w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2011\/02\/Preview-circles-and-arrows-150x42.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 390px) 100vw, 390px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can drag a circular or rectangular shape around something on your page or make an arrow pointing to it; you can choose the color and line thickness for this.<\/p>\n<p>You can create a text box and type a comment wherever you like; you can choose the font, size and color of your text. For longer comments, or ones you don\u2019t want to clutter up the page too much, you can embed a link to a note that will pop up in the margin\u2014 ideal for commenting on student papers submitted as PDFs.<\/p>\n<p>If your PDF was created from a text file (i.e., not simply a scanned image of a text page), you can select a portion of the text and highlight it, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">underline it<\/span>, \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">strikethrough<\/span>\u201d it, or embed a web link into it. You can also insert a bookmark into a specific spot and name it; all your bookmarks for that document will be listed in the Bookmark menu.<\/p>\n<p>After being saved and shared, all these mark-ups will be viewable by people using PDF viewers other than Preview, such as Acrobat Reader\u00ae.<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t get a copy of Preview all by itself; it comes bundled with the operating system. If you don\u2019t see all these functions in your Preview, you may not have the current version.
