Academic Computing Services students, Dylan MacDonald, Zechariah Lee, and Sufyan Abbasi, under the guidance of Amy Laughlin and Professor Andrew Tallon, were put to the task of producing a 3D model that preserves the texture of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/skfb.ly\/6yrrL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dove<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for closer inspection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The model was produced using a technique called photogrammetry, which is the process of stitching together a 3D model based on a sequence of images. The technique combines novel application of computer vision with classical projection mapping that produces stunning results. The software used was <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.agisoft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agisoft Photoscan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an industry standard photogrammetry software that allows users to stitch together an orbit of still photos into a 3D model, like so:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a data-postid=\"fsg_post_2236\" data-imgid=\"2242\" href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/Screen-Shot-2018-05-02-at-2.58.27-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2242 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/Screen-Shot-2018-05-02-at-2.58.27-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1019\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/Screen-Shot-2018-05-02-at-2.58.27-PM.png 1019w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/Screen-Shot-2018-05-02-at-2.58.27-PM-300x70.png 300w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/Screen-Shot-2018-05-02-at-2.58.27-PM-768x179.png 768w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/Screen-Shot-2018-05-02-at-2.58.27-PM-500x116.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1019px) 100vw, 1019px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a proof of concept, we began with trying to model a candlestick, donated to us by Professor Tallon, which had similar properties as the Eucharistic Dove in size and luster. Due to the reflective surface of the candlestick, we found that using a green screen was out of the question since the shades of green were reflecting off of the object and projected onto the model.<a data-postid=\"fsg_post_2236\" data-imgid=\"2240\" href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/candle.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2240\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2240 size-medium alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/candle-300x198.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/candle-300x198.png 300w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/candle-454x300.png 454w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/candle.png 525w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> After trying different techniques, we discovered that shooting with a white background in the Loeb photo studio proved to be the best way to eliminate any unwanted reflections in our model.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once we took photos of all angles of the Dove (over 200 pictures total), we used <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/photoshopfamily.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adobe Photoshop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to mask out the backgrounds and loaded the images into Photoscan. There, a second masking process was done to tell the software the bounds of the object to be generated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a data-postid=\"fsg_post_2236\" data-imgid=\"2239\" href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/gold-dove.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2239\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2239\" src=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/gold-dove-300x197.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/gold-dove-300x197.png 300w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/gold-dove-768x505.png 768w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/gold-dove-456x300.png 456w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/gold-dove.png 780w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once Photoscan was finished processing the files, we were left with a .obj file that formed the 3D model of the Dove, a .tif file that dictated the texture, (shown below) and a .mta file that maps the texture to the 3D model.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a data-postid=\"fsg_post_2236\" data-imgid=\"2238\" href=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/texturemap.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2238\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2238\" src=\"http:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/texturemap-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/texturemap-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/texturemap-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/pages.vassar.edu\/acs\/files\/2018\/05\/texturemap.png 522w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 260px) 100vw, 260px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, we loaded the model into <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blender.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blender<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an open source 3D modeling software. Here, we made edits to the generated 3D model, such as filling in the bottom area of the Dove where photos were not available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the model was ready to be published on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sketchfab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SketchFab<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an online publishing platform for 3D models, which allows users to manipulate the model in 3D space and view the model in virtual reality.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From start to end, the process took about a semester for the initial research and testing, and half a semester for photographing the Dove and making edits to the model.
