If a student decides to register with AEO, he or she will be required to complete a self-identification form in order to receive accommodations. To receive academic accommodations, every semester the student will be required to complete a student information sheet and academic accommodation form in which the student lists which accommodations he or she is requesting. This form also gives the student the choice of disclosing their disability. Choosing to disclose means that the student’s academic accommodation letter will include the student’s diagnostic label. After these forms are processed, the student will receive his or her academic accommodation letter. An academic accommodation letter identifies every academic accommodation that has been approved for the current semester as well as the student’s diagnosis if he or she has chosen to disclose.
When students receive their accommodation letter, they will also receive an email with instructions to forward their accommodation letter to professors and to request a meeting with them to discuss their approved accommodations. In other words, students must self-identify at the beginning of each semester. Students are required to meet with professors in person within one week of receiving their accommodation letter. At the meetings with their professors, students should discuss how their specific accommodations will be carried out in the professor’s class.
Student says: My biggest complaint is mainly the amount of work that students with disabilities have to go through to receive accommodations, especially when faculty members are not aware of the procedures of the office.
