VASSAR XCTF QUARTERLY
VASSAR XCTF QUARTERLY
SPRING 2016
The goal here is to connect current Vassar College Cross Country and Track athletes to our amazing Alumni/Parent/Family network. If you majored in similar areas, currently work in a related field, or know someone who does, we hope that you take the moment to reach out and make that connection.
We all know what it's like to not absolutely know what we'd like to do after Vassar, and a quick conversation with someone who's been there or is there now could make a big difference to our Seniors!
Please let Coach Justin (juharris@vassar.edu) know if you're interested in connecting with one of them!
Seniors | Major | Goals for Life after Vassar | Legacy/Message to Current Team |
Curt
Beck |
Philosophy | "I enjoy problem solving and interacting and developing relationships with people. I intend to pursue a career in consulting which will allow me to understand and to solve various problems while building relationships with people."
Kyle Dannenberg | Anthropology (Pre-med) | "I am interested in health and considering medical school. Thus, I am exploring opportunities in the biological or social aspects of health." | We are only as good as our weakest link and everyone, from top to bottom, matters. Try your hardest and "Why not me?" |
Ava
Farrell |
Biology | "I'm interested in medical biology, and public health. These disciplines of life sciences as applied to medicine combine my passions for biology and working with people." | We have unique opportunities to share experiences with Grandpa Ron and mix between gender and ages, which is not something everyone gets to experience. |
Colin Hepburn | Science, Technology, and Society | "I am interested in public health and discovering new and innovative ways to improve health outcomes for people in need by focusing on at-risk populations on either a domestic or international level." | Take ownership of your own success and trust the coaches. Advocate for yourself by meeting and communicating with coaches who want nothing but the best for you. |
Sarah
King |
Neuroscience | "I am interested in early childhood development and learning how our earliest years continue to affect our mental and physical health throughout life."
Morrie
Lam |
Biochemistry | "I enjoy exploring the small nuances of how the human body works, more specifically, how our intercellular enzymes respond to outside factors such as medicine and stress. I plan on pursuing an MD/PhD after Vassar." | Trust the process. When that happens, success follows. Jumps were fairly non-existing and felt an obligation to legitimize the events. |
Dylan Manning | English/Japanese | "I'm looking to get involved in publishing, editing, writing (creative or technical), journalism, or international business, particularly in Japan and east Asia."
Sarah Muskin | Environmental Science | "I want to apply my passion for environmental issues, including social justice and global sustainability, in practical and meaningful ways through education, scientific exploration or water policy development." | We are a big family and to don't give up. Do the best you can to honor the upperclassmen's efforts when you're an underclassmen. |
Mollie Schear | Biology/Jewish Studies | "I am interested in medicine, either giving it to patients or doing research and studying it in a lab. I am interested in genetic and infectious disease. I am the exploring the idea of medical school and taking a year or two off and studying for the MCATs while working in a hospital or lab or taking more classes." | The depth of the team across all events has grown and that allows us to feel like we deserve to be at the top of Liberty Leagues, ECACs, and NCAAs. It wasn't always the case frosh/soph years. Don't get complacent. Stay hungry. Best is yet to come for everyone - including those sick, injured, etc. |
Cory Terwilliger | Political Science | "I'm interested in raising awareness and working towards a solution on issues such as mental health."
Taylor
Vann |
Environmental Science | "I plan to become an environmental lawyer and focus on addressing climate change through polluter litigation. Immediately after Vassar, I hope to gain experience in a law firm before going to law school." | You get out what you directly put in. Its on you, the athlete, to put yourself out there and try; to prove yourself. Spower went from not training over fall to everyone out there together and competing on their own. Proud of that. |
Jonah Williams | Urban Studies | "I am interested in how the built environment affects people's lives and want to work to create healthy, sustainable and livable communities." | The team and coaching staff are an incredible support network, and is proud to see others not give up and to hopefully inspire others by sticking with it even given his circumstances with heart. |
Pete Winkeller | Film/Econ |
"I want to make films. What more is there to say? I want to hone the craft, become better through experience, and learn to make stuff that truly entertains and makes people interested." |
It's easy to dwell on the past and think that we won't be as good as we are this year when the seniors graduate, but every year new teammates step up, inspire us, perform well, and are great people/friends. Stay optimistic. |
