Who We Are

VAST is an exciting mentoring program with a focus on early college readiness and awareness. Vassar College students serve as VAST Mentors to Poughkeepsie Middle School students (VAST Scholars), helping with tutoring, academic enrichment, and extracurricular activities.

Program sessions are Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 2:55 to 4:30 pm.

About VCUEI

The Vassar College Urban Education Initiative (VCUEI) was established in 2003 by Dean of the College and Professor of Education Chris Roellke.  Located in the newly renovated historic Judith Loeb Chiara ’49 Center at The Maria Mitchell Observatory, the office oversees the education outreach programs of the college and serves as a coordinating resource for faculty, students, and administrators who are interested in working in local and regional schools.

VCUEI offers other programs besides VAST:

  • Exploring College: Assists local high school students with the college readiness, SAT prep, applications, and financial aid
  • VELLOP: Pairs Vassar College tutors with ELL (English Language Learner) students at Poughkeepsie High School and elementary schools
  • Exploring Science: Welcomes local elementary classrooms to attend guided field trips of the Vassar College Farm and Ecological Preserve
