VAST Activities: Writer’s Workshop

We’re aiming to give kids the space to practice using writing as a way to express original ideas and opinions. In this process, we view structured and creative group discussion as a key technique to get ideas flowing. Our planned workshops target broad issues such as racism, sexism, gun violence and LGBTQ rights on a relatable and student-driven level. We also use media such as music videos or spoken word performances as a vehicle to get conversation started. Ultimately, we want the students we work with to come out of our workshops with not only an increased confidence and knowledge about these broad issues, but a love and pride in their writing abilities.
