Pedagogy in Action 2014
Thursday, May 29 & Friday, May 30
You’re invited to spend some time lavishing attention on an assignment, a module, or a unit of one of your courses…
We’ve created this year’s Pedagogy in Action (PIA) with a different focus than it’s had in years past. Rather than emphasizing comprehensive course revision, this year’s PIA theme will be “Active Learning,” with an emphasis on building productive classroom activities that extend beyond traditional lecture and discussion formats. We’ll discuss activities ranging from but not limited to the inclusion of case studies and problem solving activities to reflective journaling and technology-enhanced student projects.
Over this two-day discussion-centered workshop, we’ll explore how to create assignments that reflect your learning goals. We’ll also discuss how to assess non-traditional assignments effectively, and reflect upon how to engage students with diverse learning styles. Additionally, we’ll hear from colleagues who have used active learning techniques in their classrooms and collectively consider the benefits and challenges of such approaches.
Each day’s workshop will run from (approximately) 9:00 am to 3:00 pm; the Learning, Teaching, and Research Center will provide morning coffee and mid-day lunch. Faculty participants will receive a small stipend and have access to a small pool of financial support to facilitate the implementation of their new classroom activity during the 2014-15 academic year.
Registration and schedule information is available on this site. The registration deadline is April 15, 2014.
