Pitch is a podcast about music and the effects it has on us, its listeners. The podcast does quite well for itself, named one of the best music podcast of 2014 by Slate. So far, they’ve release 14 unique episodes ranging in topic from how testosterone changed the voice of a trans singer named Dana to how Cristin Milioti had to learn to play the piano for her role in the musical “Once.” In spite of how interesting all 14 topics are, one in particular stands out.

Thornton Creek School is a public elementary school in Seattle. For various reasons, including poor funding, many public schools find themselves prioritizing academics in favor of extracurriculars like the arts. Thus, students go without education in theater, dance, and music. This is not the case at Thornton Creek. The school has specifically built music education into its curriculum, encouraging their young students to think in new and creative ways. One such way is the Expedition of Sound. A second grade class at the school decorated a bus stop with 6 panels, each inviting passerbys to explore sound. Listen to the Pitch podcast below to find out more about this specific project and about the great work this school is doing for its students.
