Vassar College is committed to developing and maintaining a sustainable and environmentally responsible mode of operation, within the context of its educational mission, fiscal constraints, and responsibilities to students, faculty, staff, alumnae/i, and the local community. This commitment to environmental responsibility is intended both to educate the College community about environmental issues and to minimize, to the extent possible, the College’s impact on the environment.
Who we are:
In 2012 recognizing the growing importance of sustainability in society and in Higher Education, Vassar decided to reorganize the way in which sustainability is structured at the college. We would not be where we are today if it were not for the work of Professor Lucy Johnson and Professor Jeff Walker to oversee much of the groundwork in establishing the College Committee on Sustainability and addressing initial efforts to expand campus recycling and move-out waste. In recent years campus efforts have now outgrown their little time spare time and so in order to ensure that Vassar Sustainability continues to grow and prosper we have created a new full time position in the Dean of Strategic Planning Office to oversee Vassar’s green efforts.
- Tom Porcello, Associate Dean of Strategic Planning
As Associate Dean of Strategic Planning, Tom works to ensure that sustainability is being incorporated into the long term vision of Vassar and at all levels of administration.
- Mary Ann Cunningham, Associate Professor of Geography & Faculty Sustainability Coordinator
Mary Ann works to tackle the question of how we may better teach students and the larger Vassar community about sustainability. This means discussing the role of sustainability, defined as an economic, social and environmental issue, in the curriculum and how departments may incorporate these principles into their classes.
- Alistair Hall, Sustainability Assistant
Alistair graduated from Vassar College in 2011 with a major in Urban Studies and after a year away, working as a environmental advocate and organizer with Green Corps, is now back overseeing much of the day-to-day of Vassar’s green initiatives. This entails working with the sustainability interns and other administrative offices to improve our operations, organize programming, and promote visibility of Vassar’s efforts both on and off campus.
